Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.10
Openssh-server 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2

Since I upgraded ubunto to 9.10, my ssh server stoped working correctly.
No changes were made in the configuration and now it just freezes up the connections, leaving processes 5 and 6 hours old pending.
The machine accepts the connection, Once I insert my username and password it just freezes.
Same thing happens when I try to connect locally "ssh localhost".

ps: I already removed and reinstalled the package openssh-server

Any ideas?
Thank you

Filipe

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I DID report it using ubuntu-bug and I DID the 3 points you "need". Why is it incomplete and low priority?

1. any ssh connection to the machine freezes right after inserting the password. When trying "ssh -vvv localhost" on the local machine it stops after "entering interactive session". /var/log/auth.log doesn't provide any error, the last line is "intiate session..." so authentication is going on fine. daemon.log has nothing refering to sshd.
Also, the processes created for the timed out sessions continue to run, but no session actually initiates.

2. the behavior I expected was an actually successfull connection via ssh.

3. the one I'm getting is no connection at all.

The package was removed using "apt-get --purge remove openssh-server" and reinstalled. No luck.

INFO enough?
Thank you.

Disabling PAM in sshd_config solved the problem, but what are the implications? What is happenning with PAM enabled?

Ok, I guess you tend to ignore what you're not able to solve.

Could you please stop the server, start it up under manual control as root with '/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd' (yes, you do need the full path ...), attempt to connect to it with 'ssh -vvv', and attach the full debug logs from both client and server? This should give rather more information than is normally logged to auth.log.

Upgrade to 10.04 LTS solved the problem.
Still, it's a dilema why the upgrade to 9.10 caused this problem with no changes in the configuration and now all is working well, again with no changes in the configuration :)
