Please note that I was experiencing the crashes with the default ATI driver. I then switched to the proprietary ATI driver, followed by filing the bug report. The crashes were occurring before I switched to the proprietary driver.

Actually, the crash just happened again. So it happens on both the free and the proprietary ati drivers. Screen goes black and laptop is unresponsive do everything but a hard reset.

I'm facing the exact same issue. Its Lucid's RC pre-release.
Graphic card is ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670. And of course its happening with free driver. Propriety is way too slower to have actual Compiz stuff running.

Steven, you're terming it a 'crash' but it isn't. A crash results in a stacktrace and dumps you back to the login screen. What you're describing is an 'X freeze' (or 'GPU lockup' to be technical), not a crash.

Looks like you have the fglrx module installed while you're trying to run -ati; not a configuration we support, you'll need to fully remove it. See the troubleshooting pages in wiki.ubuntu.com/X/ for guidance.

Bryce, its an intermittent problem. I can confirm because I've the same Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop as Steven has!
Fglrx is sluggish but the opensource ati driver causes random freezes!

Again, having fglrx installed at the same time as ati is not a configuration we support. Purge fglrx completely and file a new bug report if it still exists.

This is fixed by upgrading kernel to 2.6.33-020633rc8-generic. Just finished testing with compiz and some extensive 3D work for the last 20 hours since when this machine has been running on. Once again, just to note, this was for XPS 1645 with ATI Radeon HD 4670. BTW, an earlier version of 1645 laptop with Radeon 3670 has no issue with X, compiz or 3D at all with Lucid's default kernel 2.6.32 something.
Hopefully, it'll help people out there!

Cheers.

I have random freezes of GDM as well as even full reboots... (occured just a minute ago...) haven't tried to ssh the machine, though, when frozen. Occured with both the oss driver as well as the fglrx. My card is a Radeon HD 4200 (resp. 4250) in an AMD environment.

I'm not sure about this - I don't think it's fixed.

uname -a:
Linux desktop 2.6.34-5-generic #14~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 14:58:56 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I still have random freezes. By now I have tried to ssh the machine - it's totally frozen and there is no log output at all that I could find. I don't have fglrx installed.

What output exactly would help you most? See above for my lspci. Unfortunately for the PC I'm having this problem with it would be pretty hard to switch to a different card. So I'd be really glad if the driver wouldn't cause those freezes anymore....

At the moment I'm trying 2.6.35-22-generic, which is a backport from Maverick in Lucid - and within a short time I had two complete crashes with reboot. So now I'm pretty sure - unfortunately this can't be resolved, or it's a new bug.
