Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

GDM is set up to run both my monitors in "Same image in all monitors" mode (confirmed with gnome-control-center in the gdm session). However, my main monitor, an external display, turns off when gdm starts up. The laptop screen is not normally usable, meaning gdm is largely unaccessable.

Once a user logs, the "Same image in all monitors" mode works perfectly. It's just gdm that gets it wrong, somehow.

I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

upstream rather suggests it's an xorg or videodriver issue

That was one possibility they suggested.... however, given that everything
works once the gdm session ends and the regular user session starts, I doubt
that it's the case.

gdm is a standard gnome-session, not sure how you manage to run the display control dialog in the gdm session but that's not something any standard user will manage to do or should have to do, yet once you change the settings there gdm is not doing changes but it's rather gnome-settings-daemon and xorg which are the same component that for your user session...
