Bug Description

Binary package hint: empathy

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 Beta2 (updated as of Mon 19th April 2010 ~10:00am). When connecting to or disconnecting from a VPN (mine uses the remote server as default route) the empathy connection is lost , though the task bar doesn't report this and the status remains as online. This happens even in mid-conversation.

Sadly, I can no longer test this issue as VPN no longer works for me.
Previously however I was connecting to a VPN using the ubuntu network icon.
Empathy connections would continue when the VPN was connected, but on
disconnecting the connection would appear to stay up (i.e. the client would
appear to be logged in) but no further messages could be sent using the MSN
protocol (at least as it's the only one I use).

This happens to me also. And I can add it is not when I disconnect from a VPN, rather than when I connect to it. It may be important that is a VPNC (IPSec) VPN.

As Damien pointed out, Empathy appears as "connected", although no messages come in nor out. Additionally, if one tries to disconnect and reconnect, it takes a long time and finally fails.

The steps to reproduce it are:

1.- Connect to Empathy and log in to any account.
2.- Connect to VPN.
3.- Send a message or try to receive one. Empathy no longer function.

I have the same problem too, but no need for a VPN:
- Start Empathy (I have a gtalk account)
- Confirm that you are online (Two green dots in the status bar, one for empathy and one in the new 10.4 panel thingy)
- Disconnect from the network
- Verify that your network is gone (for example browsing does no longer works)
- Observe that the two status icons are still green (Connected with no network ???)
- Click on the green Empathy icon -> Contact list shows
- Double Click on a contact shown as online -> Chat window shows
- Chat -> Chatting seems to work
- Connect to network again -> Empathy shows 'Disconnected' - 'Connected' in the chat window

-> It looks to me like Empathy does not get it that it looses the network when the network goes, only when it reconnects
