Bug Description

After upgrade from karmic to lucid, luminosity cannot be set on a laptop (Asus Pro 5JI).

When pressing the luminosity keys, dmesg send the following output :

Hardware: Asus UL30a with intel chipsets (including video). There appears NO new dmesg entry when pressing the brightness keys. And it works, I can change the brightness w/o problems.

Hi Marc,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 566193

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

More information : when passing the parameter "acpi_backlight=vendor" to the kernel at boot time, user can change luminosity by using the "fn" key on the keyboard ("light+" and "light-").
However, dmesg continues in sending errors and GNOME light applet cannot be used to set luminosity.

I can still reproduce the bug with 2.6.35-19. The workaround mentioned by Ryan works fine here (ASUS P81IJ). I applied it by editing /etc/default/grub and changed the line which says:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to:
  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi='\"!Windows 2009\"'"

And ran update-grub

How can we get someone to notice this bug and fix it? I can only imagine how many new Ubuntu users are put off by this and end up dismissing the OS :(.

Have not tried yet any workaround, because I have same Asus UL30A laptop than Kamil who reported those are not working.

I experienced quite much short (1..30 s) mouse/cursor lockups with earlier kernel 2.6.38-9 but now with 2.6.39 those lockups are rare. I don't know are the lockups related with this bug?

I suppose now that those lockups are due MTRR error with video memory allocation, situation is indeed better with 2.6.39 but MTRR error still causes minor "stickiness" of graphics performance every now and then.

I did the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor"
workaround (no change in ACPI!) and now backlight works. dmesg now shows other errors:

Marc Bristiel, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Since the computer affected by the bug is still run under 12.04 I can't test the dev version.

Bug still exists in 12.04, "Linux [...] 3.2.0-51-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 24 20:21:10 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux"

And workaround boot parameter "acpi_backlight=vendor" still works.

Closing this bug with Won't fix as this kernel / release is no longer supported.
Please feel free to open a new bug report if you're still experiencing this on a newer release (Bionic 18.04.3 / Disco 19.04)
Thanks!
