Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

First, I'm not sure this is an issue with compiz. I would be surprised if this bug isn't a duplicate.
Whenever I boot my system, everything is fine but when I open any application or window, it appears, usually, in the upper-left hand side of my display and lacks a title bar (so no title, close, minimize, maximize buttons). Transparency seems to work find, but I am also unable to switch windows with alt+tab and am unable to switch to different workplaces either through ctrl+alt+[arrow] or through the workplace applet on my gnome panel.

I've been able to work around this by opening a terminal via the gnome-panel menu and running 'compiz'. This gives me my menu bars back and all my previous functions (that I've noticed). It would seem that I am unable to adjust the 'level' of my "Visual Effects" (through System>Preferences>Appearance). I can select "Normal" level, and I get the usual flickering and the alert asking me if I want to keep these settings, but this appears to have no effect and compiz behaves as if I had not made the change. When I go back to check my Visual Effect settings I see that the radio is on "None" and not "Normal".
