Bug Description

There is a harmful spacing between the rightmost scrollbar, in the package list, and the edge of the screen, even when maximized. This goes against Fitt's law.

This is probably a gtk bug, see #25529 and #40966 for further examples

Oh, actually It doesn't seem it is the exact same problem, I think this is something to with synaptic rather. Sorry for the confusion.

Removing the extra space would be against Fitts' Law, since it would also remove the space between the buttons in the lower left cornor and the statusbar/window border.

A possible solution, that can also be found in evolution, is to add an extra space around the buttons and violate the alignment.

It's been a long time since this bug was reported. Is it still an issue in Lucid?

Yes it's still an issue, though as a wishlist one could argue whether it should be attached to a released distro rather than $next_release. The basic request is to remove the border spacing around the panes, so it's closer to Nautilus's layout. Screenshot attached, the buttons as mentioned aren't ideal.

If I understand correctly, I don't think I have that spacing in Lucid's default theme (ambiance).
Which theme are you using?

You do have that spacing, It's the space between the edges of the panes the toolbar, the status bar and the left/right window decorations. I've marked it with red dimension arrows. I'm using Maverick/Ambience but the same border was apparent in Lucid. The theme doesnt affect this, the border is defined in $synaptic_repo/gtk/glade/window_main.glade
