We've changed the check to >= max texture size instead of > max texture size to fix bug 428769. There is no way to allow your system to work and prevent that one from breaking since drivers apparently handle this differently.

I'm a little confused. My 2048x 768 setup has worked in Ubuntu for at least the last couple of years, and worked until the Lucid - Beta 2 updates. The drivers being used now is the same driver that was used before the Beta 2 release. Please explain further. This refusal to fix makes no sense to me, and it means that anyone wishing to use a dual screen setup of this size (1024x768 + 1024x0, the largest possibbe and probably most used setup of dual-monitors), and utilize compiz, must change to a different distro (or at a minimum, back to Karmic).

Someone else has a 2048xwhatever resolution and their max texture size is 2048 just like yours but on their system running complz results in unusable screen corruption. Given the choice between someone not being able to use their computer at all and someone not being able to use compiz we've chosen the second option. That is why this is Won't Fix.

Bug 428769 is suppose to fix compiz so that it can run on a 2048x1152 monitor. People had no problem running lucid on this size monitor if they used Metacity. And, if the bug is fixed, it should also fix my problem. Iim using the same Intel board that the Bug 428769 user is using - So, this is not a driver issue. Actually, I have doubts that you have fixed the problem - There are no comments, after the change, stating such,

Thought that you would be interested to know that my setup works perfect in Kubuntu (Just installed next to GNOME). Compiz (and their compositor) started with no hitches on my dual-monitor setup. Go figure... Perhaps their guys can tell you how they solved the problem.

Ok, I see where the misunderstanding is now. Your hardware supports running compiz in this configuration, sure. Someone with an almost identical setup gets an unusable system when compiz starts. To fix his problem we also had to make it so compiz will refuse to run on your system too.

To tell in truth I have the same situation. I was able to use compiz and visual effects during Interpid, Jaunty and Karmic use. And after distro-upgrade I was completely surprised that compiz had not started at all with the following error message: compiz (core) - Warn: Exceeded max texture size

As I understand properly you have chosen the best solution between users who cannot work with compiz using exactly 2048 resolution in one dimension and us who can do it and really need in it. In this case I wonder why did you make this choice? If mentioned users cannot use compiz onto their computers then I suppose they should use either metacity as window-decorator or smaller resolution. Why should we suffer of their problems?

If I'm mistaken please correct me and explain where is my omission. Thanks!

Actually, I had a problem with my graphics card, and had to buy a new one. This time I bought an nvdia card, and I no longer have the compaz problem. Nothing I can say except that I still think that the "fix" that ubuntu made was entirely the wrong thing thing to do.

I completely agree that mentioned issue doesn't affect every graphics card. But my job's one has this annoying problem.
At home I has the desktop computer and the notebook as well. Both computers work great with compiz independently of total screen size. I guess it happens due to these comps have new expensive graphics cards (Radeon HD 4780 and GeForce M240 or something like this).
Ok! I won't bother you anymore. But I hope that mentioned problem with max texture size will be fixed someday.
