Not too sure why this is happening, but it's easy enough to provide a hacky fix.

I'm still a newbie to command-line stuff, though I took a couple of
programming classes in Java about 8 years ago. That said, I wasn't that
good, and I'm very rusty now. I'm having trouble getting a clear picture of
the patching process, especially with the cognitive dysfunction ("brain
fog") I'm experiencing due to chronic pain. Could someone give me a fairly
detailed how-to as to the steps I need to take to apply this patch? I get
that the patch is changing one line with a flag, but the steps to get from a
to b, like where to put the diff and how to apply the patch, are one big
muddle.

Sorry I'm having to ask--I've always been of the RTFM school myself, but
it's not working for me this week. :p I've been trying to wrap my head
around this for 3 days, and I'm so frustrated and disgusted with my the
effects my illness is having that it's not funny. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I've been able to replicate this, so I'll take it up with the Debian maintainer.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide for all the gritty details, but basically:

pull-lp-source yiff lucid
grab-attachments 560703
cd yiff-2.14.5
patch -p1 < ../yiff_2.14.5-5.1ubuntu0.10.04.1.debdiff
debuild -uc -us

Install the resultant deb.

I've already done this, you can grab it from my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~stefanor/+archive/ppa/+packages

Note that this patch doesn't actually fix anything, it just stops the installation from failing if the Daemon can't start.

Do you actually need yiff-server? We tend to use pulseaudio for this kind of thing on Ubuntu these days (assuming yiff-server is what I think it is)
