Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

the lucid (beta 1) does recognize my touchscreen, but not precisely. i need to calibrate, but cannot find the calibration utility.

recommendation: insert it automatically in preferences/administration/accessory menu.

without calibration the touchscreen recognition is not worth it...

thank you!

andrew

the stub for the desktop /usr/share/app-install/desktop is present but the script that actually should do the work /usr/bin/calibrate_touchscreen is missing. i will try the one from karmic...

in karmic: the calibrate_touchscreen.sh is a link to ../lib/xf86-input-evtouch/calibrate.sh
the code there cannot be executed, because
"Could not initialise connection to hald.
Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready."

and it produces a nice error message

No evtouch capable device found, if you are sure you have
an evtouch capable touchscreen, please mail the resulting file of the command "lshal > evtouch_hal.out" to the
bug url https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317094, so support for your device can be added.

i hope this helps in tacking down the problem, which is crucial for lucid to support touchscreen devices!

thank you
andrew

Moving to the appropriate package - evdev now handles the touchscreen. I'm not sure how calibration is expected to work at this point.

I'll ask around in #ubuntu-x to work out touchscreens are expected to be handled now.

the touchscreen is handled correctly but the calibration package needs to be included and fixed to understand where to find the touchscreen - it uses HAL and must be changed (i am sure that other input devices needed to be changed from HAL to the new system). where is a descriptiv document on the replacement of HAL? i would then fix the touchscreen_calibration.sh - i have looked at the code before and improved/fixed it before. for this i need an understanding what replaces HAL.

The correct calibration program I think is xinput_calibrator [1]

[1] http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/xinput_calibrator

It is simple and usable, actively maintained, works with a number of drivers, and has both an X11 and GTK version.

If you'd like to try it out, clone and compile the X11 version (the GTK version has lots of build deps). A good first step would be to make a PPA. I will try to get to this, unless somebody else wants to jump on it.

The deb package should probably contain a wrapper script which catches the output and places it in a script, something like

  /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90xinput_calibrator_${devicename}

(another option is udev but that seems wrong, unless ubuntu devs have a policy decision)

the calibration unit is still missing - could somebody produce a deb version? i am not experienced with x11 (and related) coding.

Hey,

I'm the lead developer of xinput_calibrator, the generic touchscreen calibrator for X.org.

You can find deb packages for lucid in my ppa (can upload it for other releases too...):
https://launchpad.net/~tias/+archive/xinput-calibrator-ppa

I've also submitted the package to debian-mentors as to get it in unstable. It would be even greater if ubuntu would accept it themselves before their freeze deadline !

Source of the packaging available on:
http://github.com/tias/xinput_calibrator/tree/debian

Kind regards,
Tias
