Bug Description

I had this problem in Karmic but did not report report the bug. As it is still not working in Lucid, I decided to report this.
the soundcard is not detected and I hear crackling noises during boot and while the laptop is running.

The sound worked perfectly in Jaunty.

Hi rui,

What situation didn't? According to your latest apport-collect, there is still the "no codecs found!" message.

Can you also - with l-a-b-m installed - try to add the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x101

...then reboot. See if that helps, and regardless of which, post a new apport-collect. Thanks!

It is nice to finally get some attention.. =)

Well, I tried a lot of things before giving it up. I tried compiling ALSA myself, upgrading, the million options the intel driver has, all without a complete success.

This is the current situation:
1. the soundcard is detected from time to time.
2. Sound from Totem or from browser never worked reliable, i.e., worked for a minute and then it would stop working.
3. Nowadays, sometimes I hear the sound from the sound theme but Totem doesn't work yet.

By the way, i tested a live image of Maverick, and though it looks really good, again my soundcard wasn't detected and in the 10 minutes I tested, I got a "kernel oops" which I suppose maybe have been caused by this issue.

Hmm...the probemask option obviously did not help, so remove it again.
I'm thinking that if you could post a new apport-collect (or alsa-info) when soundcard is actually working and/or when it has been working and then fails, perhaps that could give a clue to what might be wrong...but we're beyond the easy solutions unfortunately.

Hmm...this is tricky. It almost feels like you're having hardware problems with your machine, but I'm far from sure.
At least we know that the probe_mask doesn't screw things up then. Also, there is an existing quirk for your machine, indicating that very similar machines work.
