Bug Description

I have Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A7640 with Intersil ISL3886 WLAN-card integrated, my operating system is latest Ubuntu 10.04 beta, I had to install linux-firmware-nonfree in order to get the card working.

The problem is that this card is causing lock ups of the system and the only resolution is to power off via powerbutton. The card works otherwise OK, speed is good etc. I have tried disabling the card and using PCMCIA ja USB WLAN -adapters and with them the problem does not occur.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hi thewk,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 557499

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I used the ISL3886 yesterday and surfed couple hours without any problems, there has been quite many updates since I used this last time and had problems so it is possible that it has been fixed, I will continue to test but so far it looks like it is working.

There is still one very small bug, network manager shows signal strenght as 100% all the time which of course is not true. One thing that I also noticed is that if I do switch wireless Off by using the switch which is in front of the computer (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A7640 laptop) I cannot enable wireless again and I have to restart in order to get it working again, I cannot use network manager to enable it as it shows wireless grayed.

My machine has crashed with the Intersil ISL3886 card so the bug is still there, I cannot say if it happens at any spesific situation. The machine works fine even if both WLAN-adapters, the ISL and A-Link WL54USB are enabled as long as I don't let the ISL to access the network. The crashing happens of course with the ISL alone so I guess it is not about the two adapters causing trouble when used together, dunno.

Hello

I am affected by this bug, How can I help ?

I would also like to add, that locks up only happen during heavy network activity.
For instance
- Multiple download in Firefox
- File Transfer with other computers of my LAN

In my case everyday web browsing and download will *not* make my Intersil ISL3886 based wifi card freeze my computer. Only high data rates will.

As above, I just have to turn my Intersil ISL3886 based wifi card off and use Ethernet instead and my computer will never freeze again.

Again, I would happily provide more info about my system and configuration.
Although I am afraid testing upstream kernel is not possible.

Norbert (spam-assassin-web) wrote :

I can confirm the report by chrysoberyl as it happens to me quite the same way.

Even updating the system via "apt-get upgrade" freezes the machine after a few MBytes of download - although no other application is running apart from the bare lucid with gnome and services. I could only install the latest updates (especially the approx. 120 MB of "new" kernel) by manually interrupting the wifi internet connection about every 30 MB and reconnecting - and hard-rebooting the machine a dozen of times :(...

This is seriously odd, since my machine is quite far away from the router!

I'm using wicd which always reports 100% signal strength, although it can't be more than about 30% (as is reported by Windows XP prof. x64, running on the same machine without any problems of that kind!!)

I have the same problem, only happens under heavy load as described. System becomes completely unresponsive alt + prnt screen + reisub doesnt work. My signal strength is correctly detected though (ie its not stuck at 100%). I'm using a dick smith electronics xh8196. It has the isl3886 chipset.

Still affected by this bug, making the wifi useless with latest Ubuntu 10.04/lucid kernel:

Will try a maverick live CD when I get the chance.
