Bug Description

Not sure whether this relates to the kernel or another (which ?) networking or hotkeys management package...?

In Kubuntu Lucid Beta 1 plus all available updates on 10/04/07, in KDE, on Asus EeePC 1005PE.

Use of the Wi-Fi enable/disable HotKey [Fn]-[F2] not only works with Wi-Fi, but also enables/disables wired Ethernet at the same time, which I assume is not desired (and that I, at least, do not desire ;-)

Side note: on my system, none of the "eeepc-acpi-scripts" or "rfkill" packages are installed, however all EeePC hotkeys I tried DO work properly in KDE - sound volume or LCD brigthness adjustments, suspend to RAM, enable/disable touchpad, etc. So the present problem report is not to related to these non-installed packages.

I found the similar bug appeared on my eeepc 900ha.

 uname -a
Linux lucid-desktop 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

When the system start, "lspci" will apear:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

When toggle Fn + F2 off, it will disable ethernet card. I haven't test if wi-fi connection(I will report later). "lspci" will only apear:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev ff)

It seems toggle Fn + F2 off is close ethernet and not wireless!

When added "eeepc_laptop" into /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, the ethernet card works well while the wireless lamp is off. But all the Fn functions also were disabled.

It seems a bug concerning "eeepc_laptop" module in linux kernel.

Here is my network related "lshw" command result:

I tested wireless connection.

At first, the Wi-Fi light is on, both ethernet and Wi-Fi can work, see dmesg information: demsg.both.txt ;

When toggle off wireless(Fn+F2), disable both ethernet and Wi-Fi, see dmesg information: dmesg.wireless.off.txt;

When I toggle on wireless again, ethernet works, but Wi-Fi can't re-works again, it reports like "device is not ready", see dmesg information: dmesg.wireless.on.txt;

I cut the ethernet connection by pull out the RJ-45 connector, Wi-Fi still can't work, it reports like "device is not ready", see dmesg information: dmesg.wireless.on2.txt;

As an additional hint, if you do "sudo rmmod ath9k ; sudo modprobe ath9k" normally (almost everytime) the wifi connection starts again.

I did not test ethernet (cable) connection.

Well, there are 3 different issues with the 1005PE model, which are related.

First, Win7 compatible bios, check if the eeepc-laptop module is loaded:
lsmod | grep eee
If not, you'll need this kernel parameter:
acpi_osi=Linux

Second, to fix the brightness, another parameter:
acpi_backlight=vendor

Finally, the actual bug, as described in acpi4asus git:
http://git.iksaif.net/?p=acpi4asus.git;a=commit;h=ced69c59811f05b2f8378467cbb82ac6ed3c6a5a
To work around the problem, disable hotplugging with this parameter:
eeepc_laptop.hotplug_disabled=1

Summarizing, add the needed parameters to your Grub, see below, and update:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor eeepc_laptop.hotplug_disabled=1"

Happy hacking.

Swâmi Petaramesh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
