Bug Description

Mark Shuttleworth made this comment on a bug, the buttons have not yet changed in lucid. But basically the new layout is

- the window controls will remain on the left, however
 - the order will change to be (from left) close, minimize, maximise

Based on an idea by Luke, I will be creating a small utility that will patch each affected screenshot (accounting for RTL languages). It will need to be run once on each branch prior to it being committed for use in the Ubuntu Manual.

Its sole dependency will be the Python Imaging Library (python-imaging).

Note: This plan affects Quickshot only. It will not correct any descriptions given in the body of the manual.

lp:quickshot now contains a 'hackarounds' directory, which houses the patching script and all data necessary to use it.

Once production clips of the controlboxes have been placed in reference/, usage is as follows:
- 1) download zipfile from Quickshot server
- 2) extract zipfile anywhere
- 3) cd hackarounds/controlbox-fix
- 4) python main.py <path-where-you-extracted-screencaps> #add '--rtl' *AFTER* the path, if working with an RTL language
- 5) double-check patched images
- 6) commit images to maual screenshot branches

Though this script works, this bug is to be considered in-progress on Quickshot's side until real controlbox samples have been added.

why not take screen shots WITHOUT the windows manager? (alt-print screen)

i know it is for peoples that start with linux/ubuntu. but peoples,
after a while, will change their defaults options. personally there's
only one button on my windows decoration: close, top right. pointing
the mouse top left on the screen does compiz "expose". and on the
title bar:
    double click -> toggle maximize
    middle click -> minimize
    roll up -> toggle shaded
    roll right -> lower window
    roll left -> raise window
for the keyboard, compiz "grid", with the keypad:
    win+123456789: place the windows in that corner or place, with
1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 1/9 the screen size
    win+"keypad enter" -> toggle fullscreen
    win+"keypad +" -> toggle maximize
    win+"keypad -" -> minimize
    win+"keypad *" -> toggle shaded
    win+"keypad /" -> move window
    win+"keypad 0" -> resize
i have those settings since at least 5 years with fvwm2 (fullscreen
was on button 1 + 0.5 delay), kde, and now since 2 years in gnome.
(kde 4 is crashing too frequently for me). I have an auto-hide panel
at the bottom of the screen, and my desktop is pitch black (i am
likely to be eaten by a grue). if i had to take a screenshot, you
would end up with a void image.

as you can see, it is not really important to see the decorations,
once people change theme, or the default behavior, your screenshots
aren't valid anymore. you'd better tell them how to use gconf-editor
so they can change their settings to whatever they like, instead of
taking screen shots. i generally don't speak on mailing list, i'm more
the lurker kind, eating informations. but here you have a problem,
screenshots are not important. they help explain something. just throw
away the WM decorations. keep one sshot to show X -> close, _ ->
minimize, and the square to maximize. if you ask, i could even write a
short note about windows management, and how to make panel applets
(i'm not sure it will do for 10.04 however)

so the motto is: do not focus on windows... just take the screenshots
without decorations.

Have a nice day.
Frederic.
