Bug Description

Ubuntu Lucid
evolution 3.8.4-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 13.10

1. Install Evolution.
2. Receive some messages.

What should happen: The messages show up in the messaging menu.
What happens: They don't.

This is because evolution-indicator is not installed along with evolution.
____________

After installing Lucid, I decided to remove Evolution. After a few weeks I decided to reinstall Evolution, which I did. But if I get mail I don't see an indication to that effect on the indicator applet. I was assuming that installing Evolution will tie it with the applet, but that does not appear to be the case.

Yes, you need the evolution-indicator package as well. That's the
connection between evolution and the messaging menu.

Thank you - I was not aware of it. Here are a couple of observations:

1. I reinstalled the evolution-indicator package, but all it shows me, as far as Evolution is concerned, is a message that says "Set up mail..." Thing is, Evolution is already set up. When I click on the message, it opens Evolution, but the message in the indicator applet does not change. So I am not notified of a newly arrived mail in the use case of - remove Evolution, reinstall Evolution, reinstall evolution-indicator package.

2. As an end user, I assume that the indicator applet will show me information about Evolution mail if Evolution is present. Clearly the evolution-indicator package is installed by default, but is then removed once Evolution is removed, and is NOT installed automatically, should Evolution be installed again. As an end user, I am aware of Evolution and the indicator applet, but I am not necessarily aware of the evolution-indicator package. My expectation as an end user is that when Evolution is present the indicator applet will indicate the arrival of new mail, and when Evolution is not present, the indicator applet will not indicate the arrival of new mail. With Evolution being back and there still being no indication, my experience is broken. I wonder if the evolution-indicator package can remain even if Evolution is removed, or whether it can be reinstalled automatically when Evolution is reinstalled.

Was this functionality just added? The evolution indicator package was not reinstalled when I reinstalled Evolution last week.

No, I believe that the plugin installed via the desktop seed instead of
the evolution package. Probably makes sense to flip that around.
