None of the BBC's videos play for me either. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 x64, Firefox 3.6.3. Opera 10.1 does play this content, however.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Could either of you please provide us with a specific link that we can try on our systems to see if we can reproduce the bug?

@Paul Saunders
It also looks like you have two different versions of Flash installed. Could you try removing swfdec-mozilla and see if it starts to work for you? The two versions installed on your system may be conflicting with one another.

Hi, Draycen.

This link won't play for me in Firefox:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10088502.stm
(mole rat science video)

It looks like I was wrong last night when I said "none" of the BBC's videos play for me. This morning, I find that several do play. For instance this one will:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/8665145.stm
(Greek austerity measures)

I've tried these with Adblock Plus on and off and it does not seem to make a difference. Let me know if I can provide any more specific information.

Hi,

the main problem I had was with the iplayer itself
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/

but since the lat set on updates, it has been fine in firefox and chrome.

keep up the very very good work.

I'm not in the UK so I can't watch any of the TV programs in Paul's link, but I get a message saying I can listen to radio broadcasts. Clicking on the "radio" link at the top (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio) I get a load of options. They all load up with a "Click here to play" button but... never play.

The same links play just fine in Opera 10.1, so I don't know if this is a Firefox, Ubuntu, or BBC problem.

Does the media load but not respond to you clicking play?

That is what it seems like to me. The buttons on the player even exhibit a
mouse-over effect as it if is working, but clicking results in nothing.

Can you take a look at bug 410407 and try workaround #3 to see if it resolves that issue for you?

Orion (jackson-benjamin-d) wrote :

Thanks. I followed suggestion 3 and added the line "export
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1" to the file
"/usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer". Now clicking on the program
causes time placement bar at the bottom to move as if the file were playing,
but there is no sound. Also, in the middle of the player the transparent
sound icon pulses. Every once in a while my speakers make a brief cracking
sound but otherwise nothing happens.

Update: Workaround 3 DOES work. I am having other sound problems in
Kubuntu, it seems. Switching back to Gnome and trying the BBC iPlayer again
everything comes through loud and clear. Thanks.
