Bug Description

I use a laptop (Dell D610) at office which is normally docked to the docking station.
The external monitor, ethernet cable, etc. are connected through this docking station. Everything else works perfectly (USB connectors, etc.) but the headphone jack doesn't work.

I've tested it on windows and works fine. When i connect the earphones tothe jack,
the sound cannot be heard through the laptop speakers (like you'd expect), but no sound comes through the earphones as well. The earphone jack on the laptop works fine.

Please revert if you need any other details or if i need to do more debugging. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper on the laptop with the latest updates installed.

Thanks,
-vikas

Hi Daniel,

Didn't know that the file wouldn't be attached if I sent it by mail.

I have same problem on HP nw8240 with HP Basic Dock. The problem is the same on Dapper as well as up-to-date Edgy.

Hi Stehane and others,
i have the same problem like Vikas ... When plugin in the Speakers in the DockingStation the Sound is gone. I am using the 7.04 version of ubuntu (same problem was also under Hoary - never tested on Dapper cause the update from hoary->dapper was not as smooth and due to needed proprietary programs i switched to win for a year now). But now i wanna switch a second time *g

some states to the problem under dapper:

and a thread from user with i think similar problem (if needed)

if you need outputs please let me know ...

Thanks in advance

Having the same issue here. I have a dell d610 with fiesty, all updates. When docked, sound works from laptop speakers or on board headphone jack, unless there are speakers plugged into the docking station's headphone jack, in which case there is no sound at all. The volume for the on board head phone jack can not be controlled via the dedicated vol up/down buttons on the laptop, however these buttons do control the sound coming out of the on board laptop speakers.

With Feisty Fawn I'm experiencing this problem as well. I have a Dell Latitude D820. I'm also attaching the output of lspci-nv when my machine is docked.

This still happens; I've got a D610 running Gutsy. Natively, I can get no sound through the docking station's TRS headphone jack while docked.

There is a "fix" -
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370909
Enable the IEC958 checkbox in the ALSA mixer and it starts putting sound out through the docking station's headphone jack.

@fisherman783: Thanks for the link to the forum thread.

The 'fix' described there works. But then, it seems to be like an on/off switch.
Either you get output through at full volume or you don't anything at all :-(.

as vikas described the iec958 has a on/off functionallity - and the sound at the dock is very glitchy if i do with iec958

as i wrote in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370456

amixer controls %% search the id of IEC-default (at my system 35)
amixer -c 0 cset numid=35 6 %% 6 = 96kHz

changing the samplerate fixed this problem for me for a certain time (10-15 minutes or so)
after this time the output on the ddock is quite again ... perhaps this hint could help somebody to fix this
