Could you please download and install the test build from here:

And report if the problem persists?

Also, what is the model of your graphics card?

Could you please try the following? In Stellarium's configuration file (config.ini), under "[main]" add the following line:

use_qpaintenginegl2 = false

(On Windows, the configuration file is accessible through a shortcut in Stellarium's Start menu folder.)

This appears to have solved the problem; will it work for the standard
download copy of the programme?

Not for 0.10.4, this was added after that. It will work for 0.10.5, when it comes out. It is supposed to be released this week. (I hope that it is.)

Stellarium crashes immediately after loading on my system (latest updated XP) - both build 0.10.4 and the download on this thread was tried (stellarium-r6054-win32.exe) - the resulting log follows below. But, first a quick comment...

The older version (stellarium-0.9.1) ran without problems on this same PC for some time, however on attempting to reinstall that version, I see the same immediate crash problem, so I believe it may have something to do with a recent update of XP... maybe a missing or a changed .DLL file.

Ooops forgot to add that I modified a config.ini file to add the "use_qpaintenginegl2 = false" line to try that (to no avail.) But the config file name was 'default_config.ini' in the Stellarium/data directory...

Hope this helps find this bug. Good luck, and thank you for your hard work!

Bogdan Marinov (daggerstab) wrote :

As the name suggests, "default_config.ini" is the default configuration file. It is used by Stellarium to restore the one it actually uses if it's missing (e.g. when Stellarium is installed).

Please follow the instructions in comment #3 above to add the line to Stellarium's _active_ configuration file.

"The older version (stellarium-0.9.1) ran without problems on this same PC for some time, however on attempting to reinstall that version, I see the same immediate crash problem..."

It is possible that the drivers of your graphics card have been updated (or down-dated :)) to a version with buggy OpenGL support.

It is also possible that Stellarium 0.9.1 gets confused by the newer configuration file. You can try deleting your user data directory before installing the older version. On your computer, it should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\hc2652\Application Data\Stellarium
