Bug Description

My Lenovo t400 fails to suspend every time. It begins to, but before the screen goes black (but after it blanks- it's still backlit) the process halts and the little moon light that stays solid while suspend blinks indefinitely. In order to get back I need to hold the power button until the computer shuts off, then start up normally. This happens every time. Suspend has worked from Hardy until recently. I don't know which upgrade broke it, but it did work at some point since alpha 3.

Hi Alex,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have this problem as well on Lenovo T400. The suspend-freeze does not happen every time but somewhere in the region of 30%-50% of the cases.

Please let me know if I can assist you in any way in tracking this bug down.

I have this problem on my Thinkpad T42. Same symptoms as #1: on suspend, the screen goes black and I get a flashing
moon, but it keeps flashing, and the fan keeps running. Also like #1, on next powerup, network manager has network disabled,
though it comes up normally if I enable networking from the icon. Like #3, this is sporadic. It may not happen for a half dozen boots, and then starts.

Suspend certainly worked in Karmic and Jaunty. I tried updating the BIOS to the lenovo latest for T42, but there's
no (discernable) change in behavior.

I just tried the upstream kernel: linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201005201005_i386.deb
It boots, but on suspend the moon flashes a few times, then there's a second beep, the fan speeds up,
and the screen stays dark. At this point, Alt-SysRq-B was required to reboot the system.

On boot, the upstream kernel gave about a half dozen warnings. Something about Error IOAPIC and a set of numbers (IRQ's?)
It continued booting and everything seemed to come up normally, except, of course, suspend.

So since Vadim tested one of the upstream kernels Jeremy's request should've been fullfilled and the report shouldn't be incomplete any more - thus I'm removing the flag.

I have this problem as well with Lucid 10.04 final x86-64 on my T400 with intel graphics or with ATI discrete graphics selected in the bios. pm suspend or hibernate from command line or gui leaves the "moon led" on the laptop blinking after upgrading all packages.

Symptoms:
"Moon" led is left blink as system hangs. Requires holding down power button to do a hard poweroff.
Thinklight is still able to be turned on or off and controls to change. Often, backlighting are still active and controllable with the thinkpad keys.

Trials with out success:
- Tried 2010-05-26 mainline kernel
- I tried the lp_patch version prepared for the X201 problem with suspend.
- tried adding command line approach on the "acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable with the above kernels.
- tried disabling one cpu before suspending

Hi guys,

you might not believe this, but after reading the post in http://nixliving.blogspot.com/2010/05/acpitool-as-alternative-suspend-method.html, i removed the SD card on my T410s and tried suspend, and it worked like a charm.

can anyone confirm this or i am just lucky this time?

I can confirm wahlau's report, removing the SD card from the internal card reader fixes this issue for me. I can suspend to RAM and disk and resume successfully in both cases. Thank you so much wahlau!

dear guys,

it is not my work around, i just found one solution online which worked for at least 3 of us now :)

after looking around, i found this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/477106

if it is confirmed that the problem has nothing to do with thinkpad T series, should we just merge this bug to bug 477106?

The SDCard fix and both suspend and hibernate just worked.

Wow, you made my afternoon. Thanks Wahlau

well, I had a serious suspend/resume bug that I just fixed with a BIOS
upgrade (T410, though) -- you oculd try that perhaps?

I have 1RETDRWW (3.23 ), which is the latest T42 bios. I'm 90% sure this wasn't a problem

I just went back and tried 2.6.35-999-generic_2.6.35-999.201006151505_i386.deb

I still get the warnings about IOAPIC on boot. I also noticed a warning (during the installation, I think)
that openafs modules couldn't be built. This time, suspend worked (it's hard to be really sure, because
the problem is sporadic, but I tried a handful of times).

So, I tried uninstalling openafs-client and using the latest Lucid kernel; suspend seems to work! So
perhaps in my case, the problem had something to do with afs modules? I'll be convinced if I don't
get the flashing moon non-suspend for a week.

I have a T410s with Xubuntu 10.04, and I had been having suspend issues all of a sudden. After reading post #9, I did realise that the issue had cropped up about the time I moved a sd-card to my laptop. Removed the card and now suspend and hibernate works just fine. Also un-mounting the card before suspend helps and works just fine.
