Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Screen shows lot of noise ; there are small green lines that appear and disappear (during some millisecond) all over the screen, in continuous.
Bug appear right after grub, when ubuntu loading logo shows up.

I've noticed that theses corruptions doesn't appear in alpha3.
Also, if nomodeset option is set at the beginning (for the beta build), there is no problem.

I have a Dell Studio 15 Laptop with ATI 3400series, working with the default lucid driver.

A similar bug report have been made, but it seems no more active.
(I've been asked to do another report by myself).

Hi,
With the v2.6.34-rc1 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ , this issue seems to be fixed.
Anyway, if it can be fixed for the default lucid installation, it will be nice.

Thanks, if the issue is resolved with an updated kernel, then that suggests this was a bug in the drm that can be fixed with a kernel patch, so retargeting to the kernel.

Hi NUt&tuX,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

HI,

Same report with the latest daily kernel from the kernel ppa, the bug seems fixed.
Do I need to attach any files?

We have recently pulled some PLL updates in for testing which may help with this issue. Could you test the kernels at the URL below and report back here. Kernels are here:

Yeah, theses ones are also working well, desktop is clear without the artifacts.

I get what looks like the same issue on my Lucid system, using an nvidia GeForce 7600 GS, running the nvidia-glx-185 driver. It's a multi-monitor setup using xinerama. Is this likely to be the same issue?

See attached screenshot.

I got similar issue on HP Compaq 6820s with ATI X1350, even when i am switching to console ctrl+alt+F1 i can see noise effect.
In xorg logs i had screen resolution 1440x900 and 55Hz, but on karmic i have 60Hz.

I installed the new kernel from comment 6 on Friday and it appears to have resolved the issue for me. The corruption generally took a while to appear after starting X, but so far there's been no sign.

Looks like I spoke to soon. The issue has now reappeared. I'm still running the custom kernel, but my machine is now pending a reboot which will switch it over to the later one that's just been pushed out in intrepid.

Hi there,
Just to let you know that with the latest daily build of lucid, this problem is solved for me.
Thanks !

ps : Maybe max's issue isn't related.

This is still happening for me with all the latest updates. It only happens on the LCD panel when there is a screen connected to the VGA port. The VGA output is fine. Are lspci outputs helpful?

Although I have a Compaq 6820s with ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 this Fix does not fixed my problem of screen-noise.
I have also reinstalled the xserver-xorg-video-ati and rebooted a couple of times, it still doesn't display right.
I'm asking for help!

Regarding my previous post...

I have tried upgrade kernel but without result. At least there was still more and more nose on the screen and I found out that it is caused by HW problem on my laptop. So sorry for, misleading.

Michal

Sorry, it is actually fixed with the kernel from Andy Whitcroft's PPA. Can these be put in main?
