Bug Description

I've used UbuntuOne for several months, symlinked to a directory named /data/UbuntuOne. All was good, each time I would edit a file in this location, the UbuntuOne client icon in the systray would indicate a successful sync, and I could browse the files out in the UbuntuOne cloud. No problems. Then I needed to reinstall Ubuntu (ran into X configuration problems related to the new open source nvidia drivers and couldn't get back into X).

The reinstall went well, I preserved all data under /data, reformatting / during the install. Upon completion, I was able to verify all data under /data was intact. I installed the UbuntuOne client software and relinked my "~/Ubuntu One" directory to /data/UbuntuOne. Now looking at my local /data/UbuntuOne directory, almost all of the documents I had saved there are now gone. The top level directories are still there, and one subdirectory containing several dozen images is there, but the documents, gone.

Looking at the UbuntuOne cloud, myfiles appear to be missing from there as well. When I look at the computers that are "linked" to my U1 account, 4 computers appear, all of which refer to the same local computer (all are named "4400p", but all have different guids). Is there some chance my data is still out in the cloud, just under a different guid, or is it lost forever? Does the UbuntuOne client have permission to _delete_ files from your local directories? What is going on here?

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this bug.

Could you please archive all the log files from ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/ and attach them to this bug report? Please note that these log files will contain the names of the files that were synced. If that is an issue, please flag this bug report as private before attaching the file.

File removal from the storage pool is not immediate, I am assigning this to the foundations team for the time being to recover the files. Please reassign to me once that's done.

Changed in ubuntuone-client:
assignee: nobody → Ubuntu One Foundations+ team (ubuntuone-foundations+)
status: New → Incomplete

Hi Matt,

After reviewing these log files, there isn't any indication that any deletes were called by Ubuntu One. Is it possible these logs do not cover the period of time when you experienced this problem?

Thank you,

Joshua

I haven't altered the log directory in any way manually, do they rotate
automatically?

Hi Matt,

By default, the software will keep the last 5 log files, so if this happened to you after you restarted the client more than five times, then it's likely we don't have the logs that represent what happened.

Thank you,

Joshua

Anyway these files can be restored to my cloud? I'll disable U1 and grab
them manually for now?

I suppose it goes without saying that it would be worth adding some kind of
safeguard, perhaps confirm with the user, before deleting local files?

Hello,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

The recovery procedure has been performed (on 8th of April) and the stats show that you have 180 Mb used. After recovery this figure has not changed. Could you please check that you don't see the files in your web ui?
