Bug Description

I've uninstalled evolution, empathy and whatever, but the mail icons is still in the "indicator applet".

Why you can't just click on an icon and select "remove" insead of removing the whole applet thing?
(And why the volume icon is related to the mail one?)

Thanks for reporting. With Empathy and Gwibber removed, and Evolution not selected as the default mail client, I can confirm this behavior as of Lucid Beta 1. The same applies with Evolution removed as well. As per the specification [1], the icon should not appear in these cases.

Another thing, I don't know why, but in my case, the volume indicator is linked to the mail one, such as the battery.
So, I can't remove that "mail" thing without removing the volume indicator too.

Removing the indicator-messages package will remove the messaging menu alone. Please keep this report to the specific issue you first described.

I'd really like to be able to set the volume without being notified that I have new mail. I don't.
Just make a gconf settings to hide this email icon that only seems to be an alternate way of accessing the settings for applications I don't use.
Thanks.

@ jens

You have to uninstall al the "indicator-*" that you don't use.
Of course it's a bad thing you can't choose in other ways the stuffs you want, and moreover, that the background of this indicator thing is buggy on certain themes -.- .

I believe this got fixed with applying kees' branch to fix the blacklists. Please reopen if this is not the case in Maverick. Thanks!

Still not working for me in maverick with indicator applet 0.4.6, see screenshot. And also could we reopen because this bug requests that there be a simple "remove"-possibility for any icon in the indicator-applet. I might have evolution set up but still don't want to see the messages-icon. In that case I have to remove the package indicator-messages.

I'm going to leave this one closed, as I see that as different. The bug you're looking for on indicator-applet is bug 537947.

Ted, thanks for referring me to the other bug. Did you look at my screenshot though? My envelope shows up even if none of the accounts are set up. Maybe I misunderstand what it means to blacklist the message indicator.

Yes, so currently it shows if you have any applications that are set to
show in the indicator installed. You're saying that you'd prefer to be
able to keep those applications installed, but still not have the
messaging menu.

Yes, but not "only if". In other words, I have no app set up and it
still showed, see screenshot.
