Can you please run ubuntu-bug 541749 to attach the logs we need here? Also, what is the brand and model of both the GPU and the motherboard? Do you have an option to disable SLI or set the lane width to 16x in bios? There are quite a few 630i motherboards (mostly from gigabyte) sold with 16x slots that only work in 4x mode.

Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu):

No Problem i twice checked both:

Motherboard is a XFX nFORCE 630I GEFORCE 7150 SOCKET 775 / Modellcode: MG-63MI-7159
http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/products/motherboards/6series/630.aspx
It has only 1x PCI Express 16x 1.0 port / 1x PCI Express 4x 1.0 Port / 2x PCI-Port
Specifications say: True x16 PCI Express Support

VGA-Card is Palit GeForce 8600 GTS+ Super 512Mb GDDR3 128-bit
http://www.palit.biz/main/vgapro_discontiuned.php?id=933
Specifications only says: Bus interface: PCI Express

I cheked every spot in the BIOS - which is the latest version already - but there is no function to modify PCI-Express lanes or anything PCI-Express related options except of frequency, but that is Auto-Managed by EIST.

Of course the IGP is disabled and the frame buffer memory is disabled.
First interface display init is PCI Express.

I checked the LnkStat with HPET enabled/disabled and PCI latency timer 32/64, not affecting 4x-Speed-setting.

8. True PCI Express x16 slot

His board:
XFX MG-630i-7159

http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/motherboards/1756_3.html
The first thing to notice on this board is that it is a mATX board, designed to fit into a small case. As the board has 18 PCI Express lanes available to it, there’s not much sense in putting a lot of expansion on the board. A single x16 PCI Express 1.0a slot is available for a discrete graphics card like the 8800GT or ATI 3870X2 if you want it. Rounding out the expansion on the board is a single PCI Express x1 slot and two PCI slots, giving room for expansion if you need it.

If the on-board uses x1, and the nic uses x1 (18-2) there should be x16 left for the x16 slot?

Ah well and i use the onboard HD-Audio.
May it be possible that the default components consuming more than 2 pci lanes??? Than it would be effectively not a 16x board. :(
