Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 9.10
Totem movie player 2.28.2 using GStreamer 0.10.25
/usr/bin/totem

When inserting a commercial DVD, the DVD drive reads the disc (audible noise).
After some seconds it stops. Movie player does not kick in by itself.
When started manually (applications/sound & video/Movie player) and opening the DVD or location....it re-reads the DVD but nothing else showing. I DO see a Disc icon on the desktop which diouble clicked shows the file browser for the disc content.
Hence, cannot play DVDś.

Have you installed libdvdcss2 from the Medibuntu repository? It is not
installed by default, but once it is you should be able to play DVD's.

Try installing libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 from the Medibuntu repository, refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Playing%20Encrypted%20DVDs. If after installing those two packages, you're still not able to play DVD's, refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace to perform a backtrace so you can present the necessary info for maintainers to pinpoint what issue you are experiencing.

When I try to play any AVI files from a DVD, they start the first few seconds then Movie Player stops with the current image on screen. The same happens if I copy the file to the hard drive on the netbook. The problem also occurs when I load a commercial movie disk

The 4 popup error dialogs are consistent, and consistently in the same order as follows: (topmost error dialog first):

1) An error occurred
Disconnected: Connection terminated

2) An error occurred
pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated

3) An error occurred
Disconnected: Connection terminated

4) An error occurred
pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated

The most recent updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] do not seem to fix it either.

FWIW: libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 *are* installed.

ADDENDUM: my foregoing comment relates to Movie Player in Meerkat (ubuntu 10,10) / Netbook remiix on Asus EEE 1000 PC. The most recent updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] have been installed, but do not rectify the problem.

I have used the "Help" dialog in the application to upload a report.
