Ubuntu 9.10 desktop won't install on HP Compaq d530 SFF Pentium 4 computer.

Ubuntu 9.10 desktop won't install on HP Compaq d530 SFF Pentium 4 computer. The install hangs after a few minutes. Going into the console reveals a bunch of similar messages:

  BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/debconf-communicate line 7.
  chroot: cannot execute dpkg-divert: Input/output error
  In: /root/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check: Input/output error

  etc, etc, etc ...

This also happens when simply trying to run 9.10 on the same computer.

Unfortunately, I can't supply logs. I had to install Debian 5.04 on that system because it was needed for a work related project. Thanks.
