Bug Description

I cannot print directly from Inkscape. The print job spools then is deleted before it can be printed. I have an HP psc 1210 all in one running under Vista

Can you try a development version to see whether this problem is already fixed?

I was able to print once by having the printer document window open clicking on the document to pause it for a few seconds then clicking on resume.

But you have to be extremely quick to catch the spooling file in the document window. If the file or spooling file is 30 MB or smaller it is next to imposable to catch.

This problem is not necessarily a new one with HP printers. I do not remember the details, but I do know that other software companies have had the same problem when it came to printing to HP printers.

I just remembered some of the details of this problem was years ago with other programs.

HP and Adobe had some problems years ago and HP was only running as a Postscript emulated printer. They (HP) were excluded from being actual Postscript printers because of this problem. While many software companies never had a problem, other graphics programs like AutoCad and other Vector graphics programs had to come up with a fix or patch after a lot of work. It also for a time caused problems with Acrobat.

I am not sure if Adobe and HP ever patched things up and I cannot find any information that tells me HP printers are now true postscript printers or if they are still running an emulator.

I am hoping with this information that Inkscape will now quit ignoring this problem and fix it!

Same thing is happening to me. Upon printing with Inkscape a new print job appears with the state "processing since Mon 23 Jul 2012 01:32:02 AM CEST Rendering completed" and disappears in no time. I can print successfully with every other application that I've tried.

Also, upon printing with Inkscape in /var/log/cups/access_log a new line appears:
localhost - - [23/Jul/2012:00:32:41 +0200] "POST /printers/Canon_MP280_on_flickbox HTTP/1.1" 200 2548 Print-Job successful-ok

No other lines get added to any other files directly under /var/log or /var/log/cups.

I've tried printing directly over USB and over the network. Basically the exact same thing happens in both cases the only difference being the time it takes for the print job to disappear. When printing over the network it takes about 3 seconds for the print job to vanish which happens instantly when printing over USB.

Printer driver: Canon PIXMA MP280 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.8-pre1 (color, 2-sided printing)

I've just renamed the title of this bug because it's clearly not specific to HP printers.

@László Monda - this report (bug #531342) tracks a problem with the Windows port of Inkscape - please don't rewrite it to match your issue on a current linux distro.

Your printing problem is much more likely caused by a known upstream regression when printing custom page sizes with the GTK2 >= 2.24.10 (Precise Pangolin has GTK2 2.24.10) - which is tracked in Bug #998156, and not related to this report.

> I can print successfully with every other application that I've tried.

Did you try to print custom page formats with those other applications?

However, figured out a way which easily prints now.

1. Click on 'File'
2. select 'Print'
3 . select 'Print Preview'
4 .click on the printer icon on upper righ

t ... voila ! Works every time ;)
