Have you used ubuntu on this machine before without this issue? It helps us to know if this is a bug that was present in previous releases.

I have been running Lucid on it since the end of December (and Jaunty/Karmic
before that). The issue started occurring towards the end of January /
beginning of February as far as I can remember. Thanks.

Kiwinote,
As you may be aware, there were significant changes that were made recently in Lucid. Have you had the opportunity to test this against the latest updates, and ,if so, is the issue still present?

Thanks!

Hi. I have all the latest packages installed and this issue still persists. None of the latest updates have solved this issue. Thanks.

It may be worth noting that this issue does not occur *all* the time. About
once in every 5 to 10 shutdowns the laptop does actually shut down properly.
I have not been able to spot any patterns in the behaviour however.

Hi. I happened to install the fglrx driver the other day, and since then the laptop has shut down normally. This could then be an issue with the -ati driver? I had a quick look through the list of -ati bugs and found a similar issue, so I will mark this as a duplicate of LP: #569271.
