Bug Description

Most proxy servers I have encountered (including squid's default configuration) do not allow CONNECT requests to arbitrary ports, only to ports commonly used in web applications (e.g., for TLS), so this is unlikely to work in most cases. Therefore, gaim should, by default, not honor the user's global proxy settings.

This sure causes problem with Jabber. But the default setting in Gaim is 'No proxy', right?

Gaim does pay attention to relevent environmental variables for the proxy.

I was referring to both the environment and the GNOME proxy settings; I'm not sure which was being used in this case, as I have both set.

I just reconfirmed this on a 7.04 live CD; setting an HTTP proxy made gaim fail to connect to AOL Instant Messenger

This is still a problem in 8.10. Setting a global proxy makes Pidgin unable to connect to *anything*. Unsetting http_proxy and launching pidgin fails, too --- is it getting the proxy information via gconf instead?

In order to get any use out of pidgin I have to use Network Proxy to disable the proxy, start pidgin, and then use Network Proxy to reenable the proxy again. This is not optimal.

I can confirm this bug in karmic.

Pidgin will not connect to icq and jabber behind a proxy if the proxy is enabled.

To use pidgin:
I need to go to network proxy -> disable proxy -> reconnect pidgin -> pidgin works -> enable proxy in network proxy -> pidgin stays connected.

I now checked this issue against lucid. And there is an option in the account configuration for proxy configuration. Available options are Gnome Proxy, no proxy, socks4 and 5 and manual configuration. I guess this adresses this issue? Or would you argue this ticket is only fixed once the default changed from "Gnome proxy" to "no proxy"?
