I also had this issue however do not anymore Try running your updates to see if you still have the issue. I also changed your affected package to network-manager from ubuntuone-client. As that sounds like the issue that you are having. Please verify that this was done correctly.

As a workaround the following enabled my network (but network manager still does not work):

Ensure that /etc/network/interfaces contains the following (if you use dhcp):

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Then:

/etc/init.d/networking restart

With this I understand that a call to dhclient by NetworkManager does not work while a manual call does work...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect -p nm-applet 527313

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

One more comment: this does not only affect wlan but every network connection. So after an update an unexperienced user will not have anymore network access and is therefore also not able to update to a future patch or request information from the community.

Because of this I strongly propose to imediatly DISABLE the update in Synaptic to the new version of 24.02.2010.

Thanks for trying to help. Nothing worked actually. I have no idea,
how "downgrade" to previous version of network manager.

Thanks again

The update to the "buggy" verison was caused by the following source I had because of historical reasons:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/trunk/ubuntu karmic main

What happens if you get Network Manager from the Main trees?

Works fine. However the mobile broadband doesn't. That was reason to
include the additional source of software.

Same with me. eth0 and wifi works, broadband not (I use blueman-applet for this). I also realized that after diasabling the source mentioned above, I do nat have a source anymore for the following packages. Maybe this causes the broadband problem, but I do not really know...

libnm-glib2
libnm-util1
modemmanager
network-manager-pptp
network-manager-vpnc

I was also hit by the network-manager trunk build bug yesterdat. It seems to only affect dhcp. As a work-around you can setup a static IP address & still be able to use the trunk build of network-manager. Also you could try using the network-manager PPA as it is has updated versions of the packages you require but is not affected by the dhcp related issue.

Mitch,

Is this only an issue with the ~karmic package or also present for other releases on the NM trunk PPA?

By the way, there is a patch available for this and applied to the version uploaded to maverick (and should be applied on trunk as well, once I unbreak the daily builds).
