Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Installed both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 Alpha 2 onto an Acer Aspire One ZG8. Sound card is working, but I cannot get any input signal from the onboard microphone. If I use an audio program, only white noise/static is recorded, for example if I perform a Skype test call. I know this is similar to other bugs being reported with Aspire Ones, but the bug hunters are requesting separate reports are logged so you can get the hardware configuration.

Hi Daniel. I've tried adjusting the input levels with mixed results..
On one occasion I was able to briefly record some sound snippets - but
it sounded very noisy and then stopped working again... Really weird
because my other laptop uses exactly the same chipset (it is an Advent
machine), and that works perfectly. I've got two Acer Aspires One ZG8
and both demonstrate this behaviour so fairly certain a bug.

Hi Andy,

I'm also having this issue on a AOD250 / KAV60. It uses the same chipset ALC272. How can I force alsa to force detect a different chipset? I have tried using all alsa options and nothing work. I want to try to force the ALC268 or ALC662.

The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).
