Bug Description

In Firefox for example you can move the scroll rectangle into the lower arrow (difficult to describe but just test out for yourself).

also in kubuntu, using the binaries off the mozilla site, this occurs.

Therefore, probably an upstream bug.

This bug also uccured in SuSE, and they said it was a bug in the GTK-QT theme engine and fixed it (then the drawing was correct), so it´s not a firefox specific problem.

Is this still a problem for you? I was not able to duplicate this bug on firefox 1.0.5 or 2.0b1 or 2.0b2

This is still occurring for me, although according to the bug report I first saw it under (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/47760) it has now been fixed. As far as I can tell, all my packages are up to date. I'm running dapper with gtk2-engines-gtk-qt version 0.60-1.1ubuntu7 and firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.5-0ubuntu6.06.1

If there's more information I can provide to help figure out what's going on, let me know.

Can you please upgrade your firefox and gtk2-engines-gtk-qt and see if it still is a problem thank you for your bug report.

Which version should I upgrade to? I'm running the latest versions available in Dapper (firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-ubuntu0.6.06 and gtk-engines-gtk-qt 0.60-1.1ubuntu7 at the time of writing). Am I right in thinking that the fix has been released upstream in Edgy and probably won't be backported to Dapper? As this is a work machine I don't really want to go to Edgy until it's stable.

For what it's worth, this machine was originally installed using a Kubuntu 5.10 CD and subsequently upgraded. I have a number of other machines that were installed using Ubuntu 6.06 CDs, and the problem has not occurred on these, even though kubuntu-desktop was subsequently installed and the default window manager was changed from Gnome to KDE. Presumably this is because the Ubuntu install includes a lot of Gnome libraries that don't get installed on a standard Kubuntu install.

Michael, Pete, are you still experiencing this issue ?

Yes, this problem is still occurring on one of the boxes I maintain, but not on others. The box in question is fully up-to-date, running the i386 version of release 6.10. It was originally installed with Kubuntu version 5.10 and has been dist-upgraded twice since then. The other boxes were originally installed with Kubuntu 6.06 or Ubuntu 6.10, which I'm guessing is the reason that they aren't affected.

I've attached a screenshot of the problem. Can't provide steps to reproduce it, as stated above this only occurs on one of my boxes. It could possibly be a side-effect of a problematic upgrade, one of the dist-upgrades crashed partway through (I can't remember exactly what the cause was, something to do with running an smp kernel back before it was obsoleted by the generic kernel), so maybe the recovery from that caused problems with things not being cleaned up properly.

As far as I'm concerned this bug can be closed/WONTFIXed, as it's a very minor issue and seems not to affect many people. I've not found any programs that are affected other than Firefox.

if you think crash during dist-upgrade caused this, maybe try to reinstall firefox.

However I don't see this issue here, but I am on gnome. Maybe its some gtk theme thing which is not properly set in kde?

Okay, I need to make an apology. After some more hunting, I found in System Settings-Appearance an option under "GTK Styles and Fonts" to fix the scrollbar issue. The scrollbars no longer overlap the buttons, although I am still having a minor issue. It's visible in the attached screenshot. The left side margin of the thumb (using the term from the Wikipedia page on scrollbars) seems to get left behind when the thumb is moved. When the mouse pointer crosses the edge of the scrollbar then the margin catches up to the rest of the thumb. Again, this only seems to happen in Firefox and not any other GTK2 apps.

When I tested Firefox on a different Kubuntu computer via ssh, the scrollbars looked completely different, they appeared to be using the native GTK2 scrollbars. Will try to test it directly (rather than over ssh) later on.

As suggested, I tried a "Complete Removal" of Firefox via Synaptic, followed by a reinstall, but this failed to fix the issue.
