Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After opening the laptop the screen didn't light up. I tried pressing keys and trying to move the cursor but I had to switch to a terminal with [ctrl][alt][f1] and then back to X with [alt][f7] to get it working again. at which point it prompted for my password to unlock. saw a crash report about intel gpu which should be what this bug report contains.

Update: Alternatively I could just leave the computer for a while after reopening the lid, after 30-90seconds of a completely black screen X restarts. It might have done this when I tried switching with [alt][f1]etc and didn't notice and just assumed it had logged me out. It was as if the computer had gone in to hibernation or suspend at some point between closing the lid and opening the lid even though I've set Ubuntu to only blank the screen when the lid is closed on AC power.

Update: Seems to be working OK now. Possibly due to a recent package upgrade, will update if it happens again.

Update: It happened again. It's annoying because any programs I had open when I was logged in get terminated when x crashes/restarts/logs me out.

Thanks for reporting this bug to help making the Intel graphics driver
better. We hear from upstream that a number of bugs (possibly including
this one) have been fixed in the newer DRM code from the 2.6.33 kernel.
I don't know if your bug is one of the ones fixed in this release,
though, but we've prepared a PPA with this DRM update. Would you mind
installing this, rebooting, and testing if the original issue can be
reproduced with it or not?

The DRM PPA is here:

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/red

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (for kernel or DRM or KMS bugs) or
'ubuntu-bug xorg' if you suspect them to be X.org issues.

I've upgraded using the PPA and the problem is still happening. I'm going to submit it as a seperate bug so all the logs are attached then mark it as a duplicate here. Will post again when I have the bug #.

It still happens with both the apw/red PPA and Ubuntu's kernel-ppa mainline.
