Lol.. Hoping for a little information. What happens when you try to install something? Do you see any error messages? If so, what do they say? Are you still experiencing the problem? Can you install software using the Synaptic Package Manager, or does that also fail?

It appears this may be a problem related to Firefox that has already been reported. Going to link this report across because I believe it is probably the same bug manifesting itself in a slightly different manner.

Could you please explain why you think it's that bug? The bug you marked this as a duplicate of is pretty specific and there doesn't seem to be any evidence that this one is the same.

(npviewer.bin:3479): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead

From the log files, it is firefox that is throwing the error. There are several bug reports of this error, all are associated with Firefox. Although I guess this could be all a side effect of the first error:

(nautilus:2049): Eel-CRITICAL **: eel_preferences_get_boolean: assertion `preferences_is_initialized ()' failed

Which would mean it is Nautilius? I'm not an expert, so open to comment from more experienced bug hunters.

The .xsession-errors file is for all the errors in the current session,
not necessarily ones related to the issue at hand.
