Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

I think the summary says all I can say ... I tried wicd recently and I still got this problem but it happens more often with network-manager.
Nevertheless, net by wire does not have any problem. And wifi does not have any problem when I try it on Windows 7 so it's not a hardware problem.

Thanks for your job :)

Hi. Many thanks for your report. Before we proceed further I need a little more information. Does the Wifi link still disconnect if you just let the machine idle, or does it only disconnect when actively using the link?

Have you checked whether there are any other networks visible (or hidden) that might be operating on the same channel and causing contention? Is the problem more susceptible if you are further away from the access point?

Have you tried re-booting your access point to see if it has any affect on the problem (most modern routers will attempt to locate a free channel when re-booted, so if suffering from channel contention it can cure it).

Just trying to eliminate whether it is a problem with Ubuntu or simply a wireless access problem.

Hi,

the wifi does not disconnect when i just go on the web or when i do not use network (or so rarely that I did not noticed) but very often when i actively use it (at least once per 10 min).
I tried to change channel but I still have the problem (and anyway, I don't have any problem with windows 7 on the same computer so I do not think the problem comes from the router). I also tried on another access point (at school) and wifi disconnected almost immediately when I tried to download ubuntu updates (I tried it twice).

I am thinking I could try to limit the download speed ... maybe that could fix the problem? (but I don't like this solution ^^)

Thank you for your reply. Having reviewed your hardware device configuration "AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)", it appears other people may have experienced similar problems with this particular device under Unbuntu in the past. Can I recommend you reading carefully the following posts which may provide a work-around for your problem by installing an alternative set of drivers.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8687880#post8687880

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1309605

If you are able to successfully get this work-around in place, can you let me know. I will then promote this bug report for further consideration to the team. Many thanks for helping to make Ubuntu even better.

Hi.

I tried the solution given in your 1st link : I installed these drivers : http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download
I got a problem after the 1st installation so I tried again using the ./scripts/driver-select command to select atheros group drivers and it seems to work! I don't now if ./scripts/driver-select helped it to work or if it is just luck but I mention it :)
Now I can use skype and download at the same time without any deconnexion for 1h30 (I have not tried for a longer period for now but it is much better than 5 - 10 min)!

So I think this solution is a good one :)
Thank you very much for your help!

This is not really a network-manager bug, it's a driver bug so it should be moved to linux (Ubuntu).

Second, there's a more convenient way to install the wireless-compat drivers, just install the appropriate linux-backports-modules package:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Getting_compat-wireless_on_Ubuntu

affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)
