Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

My ATI Radeon HD 4870 simply shows up as "undetected fglrx" when I run the "System Test" app on Ubuntu 9.10 x64. It also fails to enable fglrx from Hardware Drivers. I have been able to get the 9.12 drivers from ATI's site properly configured on the machine, however. Oh, and the latest official 10.1 fails to work at all. :P

Hi G4JC,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 519562

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 519562 in your report if you think it may be related):

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

No longer an issue in Ubuntu 10.4, the card is detected out of the box with open source drivers. It is also detected at Hardware Drivers and works fine for normal use and OpenGL apps.

However, once the propitiatory software drivers are enabled, the system fails to launch compiz and catches a segmentation fault, that's another bug. :P
