All full-scren apps hang..

Hi,

I am trying to get Qimo 1.0 up n' running on a computer for my 3 year old. It's a Pentium IV with 1 gig of memory, and a radeon 8500 gfx.

At any rate:

Qimo wouldn't install, nor boot from CD unless I made it ignore VGA options on the boot loader.

In-System everything works fine, except for applications that utilize full-screen, so all the games, tuxpaint etc - all give me a cross-line multicolour screen and I have no choice but to reboot.

I'm sure this isn't a bug, as such, I am merely looking for help - as I am both new to linux (only having tried ubuntu before, and never experiencing something like this..) and really want this to WORK! :-)

Hope someone can help me, I will provide answers to any and all questions you might require.

I'm a newbie in the Qimo theme,

but I think you may try to connect to Internet and discharge the adobe
Flashplayer plugin.

It sounds like a driver problem with your particular card. Make sure that you have the latest drivers available.

first alternative, try to install Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope version, not the 9.10 last version with , connect to internet with the Firefox 3.0 included and discharge the last Abobe Flash version compatible for linux. Then probe the QimoTry, if you can run the Quimo in prove mode try to install them.

#1 : How can flash player be a requirement post install? I got a blank screen when trying to install if I didn't use the special VGA option post-install.
#2 : How do I find, much less install, new drivers under Ubuntu?
#3 : I just installed Qimo and formatted the drive. Do you want me to install that Ubuntu version first, and then put Qimo on top of that?

This wouldn't be a Flash issue, Qimo doesn't come with Flash and the default applications don't need Flash.

New drivers are available through the Update Manager. If you have an internet connection, it should automatically check for new versions and prompt you to download and install them.

If you cannot get the video working correctly from the Qimo isntallation, which is based on Ubuntu 8.10, you can try installing Ubuntu 9.04 and installing my experimental .deb packages on top of that. https://launchpad.net/~mhall119/+archive/ppa They will only work with 9.04, not 9.10.

If you still can't get them working, you might want to just install Ubuntu or Xubuntu 9.10, and install the same games that Qimo uses. Or you can wait until Qimo 2.0 comes out, which should be the end of April, and will be based on Ubuntu 10.04.
