Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I just updated to kernel 2.6.27-17-generic. I updated my ATI Radeon 3xxx driver. Now when I try to use water effects, my screen gets really bright or really dark, and stays that way for as long as the effect would have lasted.

Here is a screenshot:

Here is the output of glxinfo | grep GL_ARB_fragment:

I figured it out. It was the new graphics driver. I downgraded back to my old one and now everything works fine.

Rotate cube and other effects like painting fire on the screen are working BUT water effect !!

It used to work flawlessly in previous Ubuntu releases but it just stopped when I dist-upgraded to Lucid Lynx lately.

Symptom: as soon as I Ctrl+Super, the screen blackens/dims (one can still see the windows contents) and returns to normal after some time

My graphics card : ATI mobility Radeon HD 3650
My graphics driver : fglrx

Same bug, Lucid Lynx 64-bit, fglrx graphics driver, ATI Mobility Radeon 4500. Bug ONLY affects the water effect - all other Compiz effects work. Get dark screen when trying to initiate the effect. Tried upgrading to latest ATI driver (10.3), but the bug persists.

Thanks! But when I use the open-source driver, the video card fan runs all
the time. Anyway to fix that? Is there a way to configure the open-source
driver not to run the card so hard?

I'll try looking myself, but if you could point me to a solution directly
that'd be appreciated.

OK, here's my solution - it worked for me: uninstalled the proprietary fglrx driver, upgraded to kernel 2.6.34-lucid release, installing the binary kernel, linux-headers, and all-deb packages, then enabled the xorg-edgers archive ppa and upgraded the open source video driver. Enabled dynamic power management in the kernel boot parameters, and now water effect is here in all it's glory and the video card runs at a reasonable speed - minimal fan noise, not running all out, not hot. If you need more specifics, just holler.

Bonzo,

Go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, look for the 2.5.34-lucid folder (not the ones with the rc- suffix - those are release candidates), and download three files - the linux-headers-2.6.34-020634-all.deb file, the linux-headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634-amd64.deb, and the linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634-amd64.deb. That's for a 64-bit installation such as I have. If you have the 32-bit installation, substitute the versions that end with i386.deb for those last two files only.

Install the "all.deb" file first. You should just be able to double-click on them and gdebi package manager should launch. Afterwards, reboot and it should go to your new kernel by default. You will have to reinstall any proprietary drivers that were hand-installed - for example, I had to reinstall the Broadcom proprietary driver. Couple of other patches needed to be applied to the new kernel as well - one for the CD eject button, one to fix a ureadahead error on bootup. If you have problems on bootup you can hold the shift key down and get a menu allowing you to boot into your old kernel. Probably you should make a copy of any important docs before trying the new kernel.

In the first line of my last post, that should read "look for the 2.6.34-lucid folder," not "2.5.34-lucid folder."

Okay I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux never really got around to messing around with it anyway. I have finally downloaded it on my desktop and my brother on his laptop my compiz works fine except when I try blur but I don't really care about blur. The issue is water effect on a ATI Mobility 4500 HD Series. David I tried following your instructions but with out success were we suppose to include the files we downloaded with the all deb file. The way to true enlightenment or at the very least my brothers ability to use the water effect escapes me. Please help

Chris,

Yes, after you download the three files and install the "all.deb" file, you should then install the other two files you downloaded, THEN reboot. Hope that helps clarify things.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

Same problem here, I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and NVidia 8600GT. When I try to use the water effect, the screen goes dark for a while, and then returns to normal, but without the effect.

Really weird, this is happening with my gnome-terminal too, when I press the TAB key.

NVidia driver: 295.49

Same here, does not work since years.

Actually using NVidia 390.77-driver.

Already tried to change the initalise-keys, without effect. Framebuffer on/off in OpenGL-settings makes no difference. Nothing happens, no way to activate water-effect.

josbuttler (ijosbuttler) wrote :

It looks like you're encountering an issue with the water effect after updating your kernel and ATI Radeon driver. The screenshot you provided indeed shows a drastic change in brightness.

Based on the information you've provided, it seems like a graphics driver issue might be causing this problem. Since you've updated your ATI Radeon driver, there's a possibility that the new driver is not fully compatible with the water effect or there might be a configuration issue.

Here are a few steps you could try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Revert to the Previous Kernel or Driver: If this issue started occurring after updating your kernel or graphics driver, you might want to consider reverting to the previous version to see if that resolves the problem. This could help determine if the issue is indeed related to the update.
Check Graphics Driver Settings: Make sure that the settings for your ATI Radeon driver are configured correctly. Sometimes, incorrect settings can cause display anomalies.
Update Compiz or Graphics Drivers: Check for updates to both Compiz and your ATI Radeon drivers. Sometimes, newer versions come with bug fixes or improved compatibility.
Disable/Re-enable the Water Effect: Try disabling and then re-enabling the water effect to see if that resets it and resolves the brightness issue.
Check for Known Issues: Look for any known issues or bug reports related to the combination of your kernel version, graphics driver, and Compiz version. There might be a documented workaround or fix available.
Test with Different Settings: Experiment with different settings for the water effect, such as adjusting the intensity or other parameters, to see if that mitigates the brightness issue.
Seek Help from Community Forums: If you haven't already, consider posting about your issue on Ubuntu or ATI Radeon forums. Other users might have encountered similar problems and could provide valuable insights or solutions.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, you might need to gather more information about your https://watersoftenersizecalculator.com/ system's configuration and the exact circumstances under which the brightness anomaly occurs, and then consider reaching out to ATI Radeon or Ubuntu support for further assistance.
