Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

I am locked into some kind of weird cycle of not being able to complete update/install of files and pulseaudio/alsa video conflict.

If I use "Linux elsa 2.6.28-17-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 1 21:27:25 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux"
There is no sound no hardware is found under "sound preferences" hardware tab.
However, the browser remains stable enough to finish this report.
DPKG under repair mode does not help and seems to report repairing the same thing twice even though it does not.

If I use 2.6.28-18, sound preferences find my ATI sound hardware and even works on occasion. Sometimes it by increasing sound
output under "aumix" and sometimes is by fiddling with pulseaudio setup.

Motherboard has and built in ATI video.

Thank you for your efforts.

Stability part of problems resolved for the most part by adjusting timing setting to auto in BIOS.

This is important to anyone with stability issues concerning PulseAudio and Firefox Flash issues.

the error there is : 2010-02-01 09:18:28,275 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: '/var/cache/apt/archives/glchess_1%3a2.28.0-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb': 'short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/games/gnome-gnuchess') which in most of the cases is a filesystem or memory problem, could you run fsck or a memory test. if that's solved with that then the bug is an invalid one, also an apt-get clean and re install of that package might help after doing both verifications.
