When I try to add a new bookmark (i.e. "papers" folder) I select the directory and then I use the menu Bookmarks->Add bookmark, It doesn't work. The I try the Ctrl+D combination, but doesn't work.

I tried to follow your instructions and everything works fine here (am not sure if I miss something), I'm using Karmic and nautilus 2.28.1, did you check your left lateral menu (nautilus)? thanks in advance.
