video and audio go out of sync

Bug Description

1) Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) 2) Build wizard PPA 3) Openshot 1.0.0

I created a 4 minute video with my flip mino HD and had no problems exporting it to youtube and youtube-HD formats and uploading them to the web. But I created a 16 minute video and the video and audio go out of sync over time. This even though the original video is in sync (and when I render it in PiTiVi it stays in sync, but of course I'd rather be using openshot!). Even in the preview pane it goes out of sync, and it stays out of sync in the exported video.

What format files are they? If you've got an unedited file of similar length, you could try playing it with the ffplay/melt players and see if they exhibit the same problem. Openshot uses the MLT library, which in turn uses the ffmpeg libraries, so any problem in either of those will manifest themselves in Openshot. There have been some recent commits in MLT to improve sync performance, but of course these improvments will not be in the version of MLT shipped in Karmic.

To use the ffplay/melt players you will need to install ffmpeg & melt, then the syntax in the terminal is:

ffplay filename.avi

melt filename.avi

Hi Andy, thanks very much for this reply.

it is an unedited AVI file.

I tried playing it in ffplay and it stays in sync.

In melt, however, it does get out of sync.

Is there a workaround?

Thanks - I really love openshot and look forward to using it more!

Well you could try converting the file to a different format using ffmpeg (sorry, not sure of the commands to do that), and see if that helps - the sync issue is probably related to particular file types/codecs.

Closing this, there's nothing in Openshot that can be fixed for this (seems ffmpeg/MLT related, & using outdated versions).
