Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution mail 2.2.8.1
9.10

I wanted to delete all of the mail in my trash folder, which had 8 months of trashed files in it.
I opened the trash folder, went to the "File" menu & clicked on "Empty Trash".

All trash mail was deleted, except for the sent items (there are now 190 files in the trash folder).

The inbox has 1210 files; the sent folder has 1573 files.

There was a message across the bottom, a "!" in a triangle icon:
"Error while expunging folder"

When I clicked on the "!" triangle icon, the message shown was:
"Error while expunging folder.
Error storing '~/.evolution/mail/local/Sent (mbox)':
Summary & folder mismatch, even after a sync"

When I hover on both the "!" triangle icon & the "X" circular icon, the message shown was:
"Expunging folder (100% complete)

Earlier, there was also a message across the bottom (on the right-hand side):
"Error while fetching mail"; this has not appeared in subsequent attempts today, but did appear once yesterday.

I looked at the various bugs presented by Launchpad. There were some that talked about problems with trash, some about expunging, some about Summary & folder mismatch, but none directly addressing my problem.

I thought that the suggestions in comments #30 & #31 to bug 27014 (directed to bug 213072) by Jamie Strandboge https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/27014/comments/30
could be relevant, but as these related to versions of Ubuntu a fair bit older than 9.10, & written on 2007-06-23, I was wary about trying them.

I am not all conversant with scripts, so can't tell whether or not suggestion #30 or #31 would do what I need.

Thanks for your help, Garry.

Hi Pedro,

Thanks for identifying this workaround for me. I implemented it this
morning & it has resolved the problem.

I am a little bit disconcerted though. The web page says to
remove .ev.summary & .ibex.index. However, only .ibex.index has been
recreated. Is this to be expected?

Can you tell me what would have caused the problem in the first place?

This is the first time that I have experienced it in 5 years of using
Ubuntu.

Is it a bug somewhere, or is it triggered by a failure in one of the
systems, or a power outage, or ...

Does this e-mail satisfies your request "comment back if you filed a
report about it", or should I update the bug report 509405, that I
raised yesterday.

Regards, Garry.
