failure to mount drives

After resizing the Casper file the fault went away and it was again possible to mount the
80gig HDD.
It appears as a setting which fails to mount a HDD (IDE or external USB 120gig HDD while still being able to mount a 4gig USB stick) which is held within the Casper file and acts as if the mount points for sda and sdc are already assigned.

The problem of mounting the 80 Gig IDE HDD or external 120 Gig USB HDD does not exist now and since I resized the Casper file, using a utility from the Pendrive Linux site.
The background of the set up is, Eeebuntu 9.04 is being booted from a 4 Gig USB drive onto an old PC, using the floppy drive option to boot from a USB.
The history is that originally there was no problem mounting the HDD but occurred maybe after 50 uses.
The suposition is that there is a setting in the Casper file, that became corrupt for the mount points sda and sdc.
