Bug Description

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

I am running Karmic Koala (9.10).
When I am using a software to chat (like xchat or kvirc), the screen becomes black for a second each "N" seconds. It seems that the frequence depends on the size of the window (per ex. when maximised the screen turns to black each 2 seconds).

I get the same problem even disabling compiz (setting in appearence "no effects").

I would like a stable image and stay in a Linux environment. I didn't have this problem with Hardy Heron (8.04). Never tested Intrepid (8.10). I have found this problem, also in Jaunty (9.04).

My graphic card is this:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV516 XT Radeon X1600 Series (Primary)
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV516 XT Radeon X1600 Series (Secondary)

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
CheckboxCommand: xrandr

Hi Ab3L,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ab3L,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

Hi Brice,

Sorry to answer so late.
Yes. I had the same problem in Lucid also. I made a little video in youtube,
so you can see what I mean.
At the moment I've uninstalled Lucid and come back to Hardy (which supports
proprietary driver fglrx for ATI Radeon X1600).
In Hardy with proprietary driver, the image is fine and stable.

Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rnvc5UElNU

If you need to know also which is the monitor, here what it is written on the
sticker: HP w22, HSTND-2241-T, product number RG556AA, assembled "January 2007,
434000-001, CTM003".

But I think the problem is to find in the open source driver for radeon.

I will try to test again with a live cd of Lucid tomorrow. I will use the live
disto because I would like not to have to reformat the partition to downgrade
another time. Nevertheless, if you have any suggestion on how to install Lucid
without to lose the config files of hardy, then tell me and i will try to test
on a "normal" lucid installation.

Yours Sincerely.

Hello,

Sorry to answer so late.
I tried on Lucid and the problem continues to be present, even if it is not so
persistent as in previous releases. I made a little video in youtube,
so you can see what I mean.
At the moment I've uninstalled Lucid and come back to Hardy (which supports
proprietary driver fglrx for ATI Radeon X1600 and does not present the
problem).
In Hardy with proprietary driver, the image is fine and stable.

Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rnvc5UElNU

If you need to know also which is the monitor, here what it is written on the
sticker: HP w22, HSTND-2241-T, product number RG556AA, assembled "January
2007,
434000-001, CTM003".

But I think the problem is in the open source driver for radeon.

I tested again with a live cd of Lucid Kubuntu and it seems to me that some
applications give more troubles than other ones. In particular, I got almost
any trouble with konquerror or firefox, but it is impossible to work, if I have
xchat maximised (the size of the window seems also affect the problem).
I used a live disto because I wouldn't like have to reformat the partition to
downgrade twince.

Btw, I typed "apport-collect 498736" in a terminal to update it in Lucid.

Yours Sincerely.

Ab3L

Subject: Or a bloody good mask.

INTPs and INFPs tend to work really well together. In my experience, as an INFP, I tend to be the one who brings the out-of-the-box ideas to the table and then my INTP/INTJ partners/friends are very good at bringing my ideas to life and grounding them in reality through their well organized analysis.

Creativity seems to be a major focus for us, at least from my perspective.

Subject: I'm funny.

Find some reading material on "ethics and photojournalism." Shadow a working photojournalist if possible. Too many people buy big expensive cameras and think "now I'm a real journalist! Maybe I can find some human suffering and win some awards!"

The ability to tell a story is a huge part of what separates the pros from the "guys with cameras." Knowing how to behave in an ethical, professional capacity is a huge part of it (and if you fuck up here, it's very hard to continue getting work.)

Here's something I tell new shooters to keep in mind. It's all too easy to shoot a homeless person. Too many assholes do this and think they're doing a public service. The real photographers will try to capture images telling the story from the homeless persons point if view.

PvP saved me from the burnout, the ability to PuG RBG is nice. I might slowly be burning out of that just because PvP balance is whack (I'm sorry but 3x boomkin shouldn't be that much better than any other comp ._.). If you play a desirable class in pvp (dk, boomkin, hunt, rogue, ret, disc) you'll have a blast in rbg's, though!
