I have exactly the same problem although on few occasions it does manage to start. Is there some way to order the start-up sequence of services since manually starting it by hand always works.

I have this problem since I boosted my hard drive speed. 2/3 of the time emerald starts up fine but 1/3 it doesn't. I think emerald is now loading to early, I had a normal HDD with 80 MB/s - now I have two SSD with RAID0 with 500 MB/s; this changed my boot time from 75 seconds to 15 seconds (this includes the start of Firefox and Thunderbird etc...). As a workaround I put emerald --replace in my auto start. But I just did this today and I'm not sure if this will help... but I will report back... I guess compiz should check if the windows manager did load... and if not try again.

Hi,

I have the same provlem. Please read below.

When I log off or restart the system after I login metacity and compiz are not start. What I do is to open Appereance settings go to visual effects and from none chose the Extra and then everything goes back to normal. The problem is that when I log off I have to redo the same procedure beacause metacity is not loading and the visual Effects set back to none.

Michael, all, I was able to fix the issue for myself this way:

When I logged back in, the the effects were set back to "none". I selected my preference, logged out, back in, and they were still working.

Michael: You simply need to delete them.

Log out and back in. It's possible Compiz won't be enabled, just enable it and it should keep working afterwards.
