Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

This bug report is from running ubuntu-bug xorg when lucid 2.6.32-7 did manage to boot to desktop.

I'll attach apport from the more frequent boot which gets a black screen. I got the black screen apport from Ctrl-Alt-F1 which gets a text screen that allows saving the apport but won't run launchpad since it is in text mode.

I'll also attach Xorg.0.log and .xsession-errors.

Jerry

2.6.32-8 today is much more solid, however when I try to select "Add comment" on launchpad nothing happens....

Thanks, Jerry

2.6.32-9 kernel booted to black screen for several days, see bug #499102. With yesterday's updates (using recovery mode fix broken packages) the kernel is booting O.K. this morning.

As of today working O.K. Will watch out for new updates....

Bug also appears with kernel 2-6-32-9, so I'm continuing investigation there under bug #499102. In the latter bug, xorg freezes shortly after boot example when entering a comment onto launchpad.

Lucid dead black screen again today! On one or another of my test pc's with intel and ati video graphics I get black screen for weeks on Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, now Lucid.

Only way I got running today was to boot in recovery and manually key in:

nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

which at least functions.

In previous Ubuntu's there was a "safe" mode, or at least a scaffold xorg.conf to start with.

Brian Rogers on bug #406460 had some suggestion on something to try:

https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-testing

so I'll give it a go. Thanks.

Well, I got

The following packages have been kept back:
  xserver-xorg-video-intel
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Is that because this is lucid, not karmic?

Thanks, Jerry

Oops, black screen hang. The xserver-xorg-video-intel being kept back likely?

Booted recovery mode, command line,
nano # the ppa lines, apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade,
now booted with "vesa".

Thanks for reporting this bug to help making the Intel graphics driver
better. We hear from upstream that a number of bugs (possibly including
this one) have been fixed in the newer DRM code from the 2.6.33 kernel.
I don't know if your bug is one of the ones fixed in this release,
though, but we've prepared a PPA with this DRM update. Would you mind
installing this, rebooting, and testing if the original issue can be
reproduced with it or not?

The DRM PPA is here:

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/red

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (for kernel or DRM or KMS bugs) or
'ubuntu-bug xorg' if you suspect them to be X.org issues.

This gives:

Maybe ppa/red isn't in the beta archive?

It isn't, it's apw/red that you were after.

However, that testing repository is no longer interesting, as the 2.6.33
drm stack has been added to the 2.6.32-16 kernel.

Could you please test with the current 2.6.32-16 (or newer) kernel?

O.K., booted with:

Linux version 2.6.32-17-generic (buildd@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-3ubuntu3) ) #26-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 19 23:58:53 UTC 2010

in KMS mode and default intel xorg.

Running O.K. No incidence of bug yet.

Thanks much, Jerry
