Bug Description

Just install the new ubuntu alpha on my testing machine. There are a broken dependency for the package xserver-xorg-driver-nouveau. When i try to install it i get the following message:

sascha@workgroup:~> sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig

E: Kaputte Pakete
sascha@workgroup:~>

The package xserver-xorg-core is already installed, but in version 2:1.7.2-2ubuntu2. So i thing the dependency in xserver-xorg-driver-nouvenau must be corrected.

cheers
Sascha

This is true, confirmed.

The reason to the erraneous dependency is this.
Package "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.10~git+20090823+569a17a-0ubuntu1"
provides virtual package "xserver-xorg-video-5".
On the other hand,
the package "xserver-xorg-core_1.7.2-2ubuntu2"
conflicts the very same virtual package "xserver-xorg-video-5".

But, instead,
the package "xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.15-1ubuntu1"
provides virtual package "xserver-xorg-video-6", which is not in conflict.

Also note, that the package nvidia-glx-185_185.18.36-0ubuntu9
does provide this same virtual package "xserver-xorg-video-5" and is in conflict.

This means that with the new xorg 1.7 one cannot install neither open nouveau nor closed nvidia-glx drivers.
One can only install the nv driver.
But then again the nv driver brakes the x somehow: only low graphics mode can be used.

See the bug #494166 for further info.

thank you for the explanation Harry. The nv driver don't works for me, i get only a black screen. Only vesa works and vesa on an 16:9 display isn't fun. OK just wait for a fix of the problem. :-)

cheers
Sascha

Would be awesome if someone could make this a release critical bug for Lucid.

We're currently in the process of working out precisely what we're
going to do about nouveau in Lucid. Once we have a plan of how we'll
approach it, it'll be easy to fix this.

#5, it makes it difficult for anyone with an Nvidia card to test lucid until at least _some_ useful driver (read: not nv) is made available without hacking together one's own package without the erroneous dependencies/conflicts.

Sune, you can always install the proprietary nvidia driver. The package is now called "nvidia-current".

Moreso, jocky (also known as System->Administration->Hardware Drivers)
should offer to install the binary nvidia drivers for you.

We've uploaded a new -nouveau to Lucid which should no longer be experiencing this problem.
