vm-included-mime-types-list not functional

Bug Description

It seems this variable can be set so that replies do not include large attachments, such as pdf files. But this does not appear in any .el file other than vm-vars.el, so is clearly not implemented.

I am running 8.0.13

Hi, thanks for reporting. This variable is probably obsolete. But,
what exactly is the problem you are getting? Are pdf files appearing
in quoted text in replies?

Cheers,
Uday

Dear Uday:

Thanks for your response. Yes, I am getting pdf files in quoted text in
replies. I don't think I used to get them, but in any case would like them
not to be there (nor any other large attachment) as I save copies of outgoing
mail, but don't need attachments in replies.

On a related matter, if I forward (vm-forward-message) a message with a pdf
attachment, it does not forward properly. That is also something I use often
and would like to work.

Thanks,
Dan

You are right. Quoting messages seems to be broken. I am surprised people put up with it for so long!

The version 8.1.x, which we are actively maintaining, doesn't have the problem. So, you can pull it through bazaar or wait for a few days until we release 8.1.0-beta.

For forwarding, please ensure that you have vm-forwarding-digest-type set to "mime". That seems to work ok.

Cheers,
Uday

Dear Uday:

Thank you for your help. I will fix that variable and wait for the update.
I have used VM for the past 20 years and am very pleased that you and others
are maintaining it. Please know your work is appreciated.

Best,
Dan

Dear Uday:

I did just test the "mime" forwarding type. I do get something of type
message/rfc822, but don't know a viewer for that. In any case I hope the new
version will simply quote the message as it was sent, including the
attachment as an attachment (much as it does in reply now).

Best,
Dan

vm is the viewer for message/rfc822! You can click on the MIME button
with the middle mouse button, and it should show you the message as if
it were a mailbox. Alternatively, you can add this to your .vm file:

(add-to-list 'vm-auto-displayed-mime-content-types "message")

Uday

That is a nice idea! I am going to add this to the wish list.

Dan, the version 8.0.13 is not as broken as it appears. When I yank a message with attachments, all the attachments appear in the composition buffer. I can even click on them and open them in external apps. However, when I hit 'send', the attachments are stripped off before the message is sent. The message received at the other end has just empty descriptive lines like:

xapplication/pdf, OctoberNewsletter20061.pdf
[display attachment]

This is admittedly confusing and undesirable behaviour, But it is interesting to see that the attachments don't actually get sent.

Uday

Dear Uday,

I am now running version 8.1.0-beta of VM. But the behavior of reply with
respect to attachments is still not optimal. I didn't check for myself the
behavior you write below, but there is still a problem: I save a copy of each
outgoing message (using FCC:) and the attachments are in those stored
messages, which does make the file size quite large. It would be nice if
there is an option to omit attachments in replies and in FCC files.

Thanks,
Dan

Yes, yanking in general is not working cleanly. I still have it under
review. Can you set the variable vm-mime-yank-attachments to nil in
your .vm file, if you haven't done so already?

Uday
