Slow playback

Bug Description

I installed openshot-mlt 0.9.54 from the Debian packages on 64 bit AMD Jaunty 9.04.

If I preview or play, the playback starts with a normal speed playback for about a second and then it starts to creep extremely slowly from then on. The audio also starts to get glitchy.

This happens when previewing and playback for any video or audio, I tried different formats, and they all seem to have the exact same behavior. Totem plays video normally without any problem so I think the problem might be openshot.

Do you have this package installed? libsdl1.2debian-*pulseaudio? If not,
give that a try. *

I got the Openshot update today, but the playback is still slow and now it grinds to a halt.

I tried both preview and playing a track, same behavior.

I tried mp3, wav, m4v, avi, all the same problem.

Current Openshot version is 0.9.54.

Running on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

With that said, I tried using ffplay on all the mentioned audio and video files and there were NO stuttering, slowness, jerkyness, or problems of any sort, it played everything perfectly.

In that case, how about melt (which is the MLT command line player)? My guess is that this will have problems playing the files.

Revision history for this message
Vanessa Lee (vanessax) wrote :

I tried melt and sure enough it has the exact same slow playback problem exactly like in Openshot.

I paied very close attention to the slow playback and what seems to be happening is that the video is being played slower because the audio is being repeated (stuttering). If it is an audio file then only stuttering occurs.

So it seems there is something wrong with your MLT installation - maybe it's related to the fact you have 2 different versions of ffmpeg. You might want to try and clean up your ffmpeg installs and see if that helps, but without a working MLT, you wont get Openshot working as it should.

Revision history for this message
Vanessa Lee (vanessax) wrote : Re: [Bug 492701] Re: Slow playback

In what order should I uninstall ffmpeg and MLT? because I had a really hard time getting all that installed in the first place and I had to install Openshot's MLT from the Debian packages because its MLT ffmpeg would cause Totem and other players to fail.

I attached a screenshot of what I have installed according to Synaptic, but note that I am running Jaunty 9.04 (not Karmic, and some of the packages seem to be for Karmie, is that the prob)?

I found something listed in Synaptic:

The openshot-ffmpeg git-2623d8f-1 package has /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg while the ffmpeg 3:0.svn20090303-1 package has /usr/bin/ffmpeg installed.

Should I try uninstalling one of them?

I also have a mlt-python and a python-mlt package installed. The python-mlt package is for Karmic but this is on a Jaunty system, I think it was because Openshot needed the python-mlt package, is that correct? Or should I uninstall one of them?

Andy Finch (fincha) wrote :

Have you got the Karmic only PPA enabled (as you seem to have got the PPA packages installed)? If you have got that installed over the top of a previous installation via the .debs then that may well cause a problem.

You could try removing the PPA installation and then try running Openshot again, or you may even need to remove the .deb installed version as well.

It's difficult to say for sure, as I run Openshot in an unusual way - I get the latest branch and run it in my development environment, having previously installed the dependencies (although I can't seem to find any trace of ffmpeg on my system, but it must be there somewhere).

What exact MLT packages do I need to have installed?

You should see libmlt++2 installed, in /usr/lib.

Did you remove the Karmic PPA (and removed it from your software sources), or just MLT?

You should also run this command to see what MLT files are in /usr/lib:

/usr/lib$ ls -la libmlt*

Revision history for this message
Vanessa Lee (vanessax) wrote :

Yes, I removed both the Karmic PPA and the MLT PPA.

I also uninstalled all the MLT related stuff and redownloaded all the debian packages for openshot-mlt again.

I reinstalled:

openshot.deb
openshot-ffmpeg_git-2623d8f-1_amd64.deb
openshot-frei0r_1.1.22-1_amd64.deb
openshot-mlt_0.4.3-1_amd64.deb
openshot-x264_0.67.1173-1_amd64.deb

I still have the exact same slow playback/stuttering problem.

This is proving tricky!

What you have got listed under /usr/lib looks very similar to me (I run Jaunty).

The only other thing I can think of to try is uninstall the openshot .deb files and the openshot dependencies .debs again. Then before you reinstall, check that the following files do not exist anywhere on your computer: If they do, remove them.

1) mlt.py
2) _mlt.so
3) mlt_wrap.o

Then re-install from the .debs again.

I'm still getting the same exact problem.

I uninstalled everything Openshot and MLT, verified that it was all uninstalled, double checked that mlt.py, _mlt.so, and mlt_wrap.o did not exist anywhere, they do not, then I reinstalled everything from the .debs for Jaunty from the Openshot web site, same exact problem.

I'm so frustrated because Openshot looks so wonterful but I can't get simple playback or preview to work without slow stuttering.

Do you think it might be a pulseaudio sound server issue? if so, is there anything I can do/check?

Jonathan Thomas (jonoomph) wrote : Re: [Openshot.developers] [Bug 492701] Re: Slow playback

It could definitely be a pulseaudio issue, or some strange SDL video issue.
At this point, since you are running Karmic, I would suggest installing from
our newest PPA, and using the distro's own ffmpeg, x264, and mlt packages.
Best of luck!
