This happened since the update to Kubuntu 9.10

Most likely an alsa problem. KMix is just a frontend for the alsa mixer.

Please use apport-collect -p alsa-base 486597

This is not an alsa-utils bug; please triage to affect alsa-driver or linux.

Reading the problem description more closely, it appears that KMix is Doing the Right Thing, and the driver certainly is Doing the Right Thing.

Changed in alsa-utils (Ubuntu):
