Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Every time I use the dictionary applet and then close the little window containing the word definition, a frame shadow remains on the desktop. The shadow is only on the desktop and not on any window overlapping the certain area. For any needed information not provided please ask with a comment.

Steps to reproduce:
1)Install and enable compiz
2)Add to your panel the "gnome-dictionary-applet"
3)Close or minimize all the windows (we don't want anything overlapping the desktop surface)
3)Type an English word in the applet's space and press enter
4)Press esc to close the word-definition -window.
5)Observe the shadow on your desktop where the applet window was.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit:
Here is a suggested (by me) workaround. (Not a solution, but maybe it helps somebody until we find a real solution) :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1)Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager if you don't have it.
2)Open it from System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager
3)Find Window decoration and click it. (You can use the filter to save time)
4)Go to the last line where it says "Shadow windows"
5)CHANGE THE RESPECTIVE FIELD FROM "any" to "type=Normal" OR TO "(any) & !(class=Gnome-dictionary-applet)" without the quotes of course.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This way you don't have the little annoying frame shadow on your desktop without losing your compiz effects.

It is not a solution. Its almost like saying if you dont use Ubuntu the problem is gone.

After I set Visual Effects to "None" (thus turning off Compiz), the
problem is gone.

What Sander Jonkers said, shows that maybe the bug is compiz related. If we can find more specific which effect is related with this bug, maybe we can help finding what causes the problem. I suggest deselecting everything in the CompizConfig Settings Manager and then enabling them one by one until you can reproduce the problem.

Well. I think I found something. As I suggested above, I made some tests with compiz options. At some point I tried to disable window decoration (without disabling compiz) but whatever I tried the little square was ticked (is this another bug?). So, I tried changing the settings regarding window decoration.
This is just a partial workaround, not a solution. (But maybe it helps somebody until we find a real solution) :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1)Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager if you don't have it.
2)Open it from System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager
3)Find Window decoration and click it.

5)CHANGE THE RESPECTIVE FIELD FROM "any" to "type=Normal"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This way you don't have the little annoying frame shadow on your desktop without losing your compiz effects.

We now have a hint that maybe, for an unknown reason, windows manager sees an open window where the dictionary window was even when we close it pressing esc.

What do you do to close the dictionary window? Maybe there is a problem regarding how that window type closes. Maybe there is a problem with the way the certain window closes as IF YOU TERMINATE THE "gnome-dictionary-applet" THE SHADOW DISSAPPEARES again until you give another word. Also, if you give an unknown word, it seems like there is no way to close the window.(I think this is also a bug)

Where can I find the source code of the applet? In what language it is written? I don't say I can solve the problem but maybe it's an opportunity for me to learn something so I can help more in the future.

We have to make clear if the bug affects compiz or gnome-utils or both. A similar bug with the clock applet which has a fix released was filed as a compiz bug. How can we check in which packet the problem is?

This did the trick! There is no drop-down menu for the  Window decoration, but manually change the text to Normal makes the drop-down shadow disappear. Thanks a lot. How did you make to find out the text for the settings should be changed to Normal?

If you have it installed it must be under System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager.Open the software center and write compizconfig (one word) and install the ADVANVCED ccsm.

Gabe Gorelick: Thanks for noticing a possible duplicate. I think that the bug #449272 is similar but requires a different fix. Check also the bug #428783 which was the same problem but with the clock applet. The fix for the clock applet can't fix the invest-applet and the fix for the invest applet can't fix the dictionary applet. You can find a conversation with the same subject (concerning when we should file a separate bug report) between the last comments of the bug #428783 .

@Gabe Gorelick : it indeed looks like a dupe of bug #449272. As that bug bug #449272 has been confirmed, it's probably good to make 'our' bug a child/dupe of bug #449272 (and not the other way around).

@ Sander Jonkers: There is not a general bug for every dock type window. Gnome panel as also the clock applet are dock type windows but there is not such problem. Please read my previous comment and you'll understand why we are talking about TWO DIFFERENT BUGS.

Thank you for responding. That shadow outline has disappeared from my desktop. Thanks a lot. However there is no way I  can see to start the advanced desktop Compiz config settings. compizconfig don't give any clue. If anything I think this must be related to missing support for my Nvidia gforce card.
